I'm about ready to try my first wrap job...any suggestions?

Kona,

Usually, about 10/16" (or 5/8", if you prefer) is just about the right space for leaving the wrap recessed for the head. I've had drums wrapped like this and it works perfectly. The head covers the bare shell, but no wrap material interferes with the head. It depends on the head of course. I recommend putting a head with a hoop on the shell, then tracing around the collar of the head with a pencil to see where to "stop" the wrap. Again, I've found that it's usually about 10/16" or so from the bearing edge.

Also, for your 50's Grestch drums (and cocktail drum), have you tried Aquarian "American Vintage" heads? The vintage Aquarian heads come in two styles: "Modern Vintage" (For drums from the 60's to present) and "American Vintage" for drums older than the 1960's (not 100% sure on the exact dates, but Aquarian's website will tell you).

Anyway, the "American Vintage" models are oversized to be able to fit on older shells like yours.

I have a question also.RECESSED WRAP:My new (2011) Custom USA Gretsch shellpack is wrapped (Champagne Sparkle Nitron) and the tom wraps are 'recessed' and inch or so from the bearing edges. I'm assuming this is to allow a better head fit. The drums are super easy to tune......This recessed wrap would be a perfect fix for my wrapped vintage Gretsch toms. My late 50's Gretsch 14" floor tom is a Monster to fit modern heads to.I have a late 50's Gretsch cocktail drum that I want to wrap.Question:Is it a good idea to wrap it just like my 2011 Gretsch toms = wrap ending an inch or so from the bearing edge? Seems like this would be the way to go.....what do you folks think?Don't mean to Hijack this thread - just thought it would be something to add here.

Aloha, Gary!

As you may recall, I had Jack Lawton leave off 1/2" of wrap on both sides when he re-wrapped my Round Badge shells last year.

I also had him trim the wrap on my original Round Badge snare drum. I do realize it devalues the drum, but at least Remo heads will go easily now.

I hope this helps!

Thanks all

And - yes those shells look just like my 2011 Gretsch Champagne Sparkle shells. When I quoted the recess earlier I was guessing because I don't have the shells in front of me now - the drums are packed away (now that's just not right haha). I will take one out tomorrow and measure it for sure.

1/2 - 5/8 sounds good.

Also - trimming the shell after it's on is probably the best way..........is it?

From Ryan vonR.

Be sure to do the prework, it will pay off...Drill all holes from the inside out, and use a scrap piece of wood to drill into to keep the covering from tearing.

Nicely done.

Nicely done.

I have done quite a few. I know there are many ways to get it done, but I have gotten to this point after what started as something to try for fun and turned into a side job I do for the local drum store. I wish I had a better idea of how many kits I have done, but I do like having a chance to repair some of the older stuff that I can't afford to buy right now.

Thanks, Ryan

i use a soldering iron to make holes in the wrap from inside out and then widen them from the front. another thing i do is tack the first few inches and then roll the wrap around the sell to make sure it is straight if its good i spray the shell and the wrap in intervals and smooth it all out ( edges are taped of coarse) before totally assembling everything, first make sure your heads will seat properly, this possibly this can save some time if you have to go back and make some adjustments. also in cases if i leave the original wrap on the shell i trim the existing wrap 1'' below the bearing edge. good luck!
