interesting cymbal

Loading...

Interesting hi hats. Looks like a pretty high profile bow (edit: never mind...standard profile bow), Also looks to be minimally hammered, if at all.

Maybe a cast cymbal? Ufip?

Anyone want to weigh in on what manufacturer made this, and when?

Picture for posterity:

It looks a lot like a CB-700 cymbal I picked up recently for $20.

I say that because of the pronounced wide lathing rings (there are 3 in-between the edge and the bell). My CB-700 looks exactly like that, and also has about the same patina/color. On mine, there is a CB-700 stamp on the top of the cymbal, near the edge. I emailed the seller to see if there are any markings on the cymbals.

The one I picked up is a 19.5" (yes, 19.5"!) and has 4 haphazardly drilled rivet holes. It sounds pretty good, high pitched but not bright. Fairly dry and crashable. I put rivets in the holes and I dig it.

I'll let you know if/when I hear back from the seller.

I thought those 3 lathing rings looked familiar.

I had a pair of 80's CB700 hats that were super beat up, and they had the best trashy sound as either hats or crashes.

I haven't seen a patina like this on a pair of CB700s, if indeed that's what they are.

Waiting to hear back from seller, too.

Either way, could be a cool cheap alternate hh setup.

vyacheslav, your 19.5 sound trashy at all? Curious how much it weighs, and if it's dinged up easily with heavy use.

Sometimes I dig taking all my nice brass down, and puting up the junkyard dogs, if you know what I mean!Toilet

Seller got back to me.

Looks like no stamps except for 14 cm 99" and "Made In Italy".

This from Wikipedia (I know, grain of salt), backed up by other sources:

"UFIP also made cymbals, which they sold under the Atlas, Kashian, and CB-700 labels."

Here's a photo of a Kashian that has the same kind of lathing rings. Looks like during the 60's all of the Kashian, CB700, and maybe even Atlas (though I can't find an example right now) were made exactly the same: standard stencil production.

There's more conversation about UFIP's stencil ops on the interwebs...down that rabbit hole when I get the time!

From buzzroller

vyacheslav, your 19.5 sound trashy at all? Curious how much it weighs, and if it's dinged up easily with heavy use.

Well, I just picked it up last weekend. Used it at a rehearsel. I don't have a scale (that weighs in grams). It's not dented at all, and aside from patina and stick marks, it's not beaten up at all. It's dry for sure, but not really all that trashy. If anything, it's on the brighter side, but not "Medium Ride" bright. The bottom has the same patina as in the pictures, but the top is actually fairly shiny (I have not cleaned it). There were three rivet holes in the cymbal, at 12, 3 and 9 o'clock. The 3 and 9 were at the second lathing ring, and the 12 was at the first lathing ring. I added a 4th rivet at 6 o'clock on the first lathing ring to match the 12 (and yes, you could say mine was haphazardly drilled as well, because I didn't take the time to measure and line it up exactly, etc. I just went for it).

I dig the sound. If anything, think of a 60's medium thin A, and add just hint of "cheapness" to the sound, and that's what I got.

I am happy to post a picture or two, if anyone would like.

I have had 3 or 4 sets of similar hi-hats---- 13's and 14's and they have all been very good. All of mine were stamped Made in Italy and were branded ProCussion and CB700. ProCussion is a stencil brand for drums here in Canada, I think years ago the cymbals were Italian and then they became , possibly something like Solars( Sabian's cheapos---stamped brass). The last ProCussion drums I saw were ,Taiwanese. ProCussion also was a brand on Rims kits as well.

I'm not sure they are UFIP cymbals ,though-----despite what the literature says. I've had a lot of UFIP made cymbals go through my hands and these bear no resemblance to any UFIP'S I have ever handled. They do resemble some Toscos ,though , especially in the bell conformation and the overall profile. One of the former Tosco owners (Spadacini?) has stated that Tosco never used rotocasting and these cymbals show no sign of rotocasting. Some of them don't show any signs of being cast at all-----nevertheless, I found them quite good. They were certainly a bargain in their day.
