Wrap Damage

From Slingerland 1977

Hi SlingerLynn,At what speed would you run your drill when polishing a drum wrap? I would like to try this method, but I don't want to cause any more damage! Thanks.Help2

As blackrome said, low speed and don't camp out on one spot too long. I used a cordless drill that doesn't really have a real high speed anyway, but I just barely squeezed the trigger in order to keep the speed low. Also, don't apply too much pressure and keep the wheel moving side-to-side along the wrap. Like blackrome said, you don't want to heat up the wrap.

Good luck!

Lynn

Slingerland1977,

If you don`t mind, could you post a pic. of the inside/bottom of the lug of this drum ?

Reason I ask is a few months ago we here were trying to figure out what makes the three circles (two up top one on the bottom) next to the screw holes, like in your pics. but on a different brand.

When the lug was removed there were three circles like yours that just leave a footprint on the wrap and the concensous was it is part of the casting of the caseing but the lugs were changed out and we were left wondering !!

Thank you !!

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

i've wet sanded my Yamaha bass drum with 600, 800, 1000, 2000 and 2400 grits

need to do final 3200, then buff.... and will post photos

I used that Meguires PlastX headlight and scratch remover on my Early 60's gold sparkle Ludwigs with just a polishing cloth and It really brought the color and shine back to them. Worked so well I went over my Premiers. They shined up more too. That stuff works. I also found some nice microfibre towels at the Dollar tree that work great. Where they keep the sandpaper, and hardware stuff.

and further on... each grit change is done perpendicular to the next

still need to go to 3200, then buy a drill/polishing bonnet rig

i've only chosen to do the top 2/3 of the drum for now, but the last photo shows the difference from the original; the bottom is actually in pretty good shape, and will just get marked up eventually anyway

It's for sure part of the lug casting your seeing the holes from. It looks like part of the casting "tree" or legs from the form mold. I can post pics later if you like. No time now sorry.
