Glitter Blast paint finish

RogerSling,

Thanks so much for the info. Very informative. Do you use spray paint or a paint sprayer? What kind of paint do you use? Also, when you say "smooth it out as best you can", what do you mean by that?

Hopefully that is the end of my questions. I really appreciate your help. The thought of doing a dark copper sparkle intrigues me.

Well, smoothing out the top is a bear. Are you using small glitter?

Not entirely sure Jonni. I had thought that I would use larger flakes. I am struggling to decide if I am going to proceed with this process or wrap with Illusion film which would cost a little under $70.00.

One thing I had considered was building an automated rotisserie for the shells and potentially use bartop acrylic for the top coat. I did an event last year where some set pieces had been built that way: large flake glitter with bartop clear coat and they looked every bit as brilliant as the glass glitter wraps. The sparkles were large and very prevalent from 100' away with a smooth to the touch gloss finish. The guy that did that process is convinced that the process would work if the shells could rotate continuously for four or five hours while the acrylic dried. I am not sure I am the guy to take on that process though.

I have been using products from here, www.paintwithpearl.com

Check this thread out

It is not anything like an old vintage (or new) sparkle wrap with the bigger flakes in it but it looks pretty nice. The copper drums in the thread were the first ones I tried it on. I think you can get the powder with a larger size flake if I remember correctly. I use a Jaguar SLP HVLP gun made by spraycat.

JC, thanks for posting. I remember that kit and think it looks great. Having spent the evening thinking about it, it just does not make sense for me to go out and buy a paint sprayer. I don't really have the shop for it and I doubt I would get enough use out of it to justify the expense. In my heart, this is exactly what I would love to do, but the reality is that it won't make sense. I am pretty convinced that I won't be happy with a brush or rattle can application so that leaves me with wrapping. A satin flame finish is pretty cheap, doesn't require the tools and will look cool. I at least know how to do that. Thanks VERY much for yours, Jonni's and Rogers's help. Maybe someday....

Absolutetly. I am pretty slow at this as I only work on these things in my spare time and I seldom have any. As an example, last night I tried Citristrip for the first time on a 13" Corders shell to remove the glue. I got about a fourth of it done. I am going to try and finish that tom tonight and then I'll drop it by Drum Supply House and let the cut a new bottom reso edge. After that I have to clean a 12x16 former TDR snare and then decide if I am going to restore the 22" Big R Rogers shell that I got from Billnvick or if I am going to use either the 22" or 24" Slingerland kicks that I have that only need some holes filled and then a re-wrap.
