Old Slingerland snare

Loading...

Hi

I've just come from a thrift shop, where I saw an old WMP Slingerland drum. I didn't look at it as closely as I problably shoud, because I'm not really a collector (yet), but I've been thinking about it and would like to find out more. It's deep - probably 7", and it has clip lugs something like the ones seen in this drum

http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/images/other_stuff/rich_k/fulldr3.jpg

At least two of the lugs, possibly three, are broken - the clips are cracked off where they go over the hoop, so that they don't hold any more. Other than that, it seems in good shape, though I didn't even look at the snare strainer much. The finish is very yellowed.

So my questions are - what are the chances of getting replacements for the broken clips ? How would I go about figuring out what is a reasonable price to pay for such a drum ? Is there any way of dating it ? Are there other things I should check if I go back ?

Thanks from a newbie,

Bill

Oops, just realized I posted this in the wrong group - meant to put it in the "Vintage Drums" group. Not sure how I managed to get it here, though perhaps the part about replacing the broken clips is relevant.

Would it be cool to cross post into the other group ?

Cool to post in either. What are they asking for the drum? It is probably a solid shell which bring a good buck. I don't think parts would be an issue. Good luck

I think I could get it for $200 (Canadian), I didn't really press him for a price because at the time I wasn't really thinking about getting it for my self. I made the mistake of telling him there was a shop nearby where they might know more about it ... So I'm hoping to go back before he actually does.

Just to clarify my last post - its not that I want to get back and get the drum before he knows what he's selling - it's a charity thrift store, and I don't really want to rip him off.

It's just that I'm afraid if he shows it to someone else, they'll snap it up, and I've decided I really would like it myself. I can't get back til tomorrow.

Given the broken parts, I'm assuming that $200 wouldn't be an incredible bargain, though part of my reason for posting here to find out how I figure that out. I don't really know what to look for to know if its in good enough condition to be collectable, or if its collectable just because of it's age.

I'm guessing those lugs mean it was made in the 20's or early 30's ?

Thanks for any help, and sorry if I'm rambling ...

If its a thrift store than they got it for nothing, anything they get is a profit. Offer them a hundred, if you get it than you got the extra hundred to put back into it. Good luck
