Insert modification

Loading...

Hello everyone! I am working on an old MIJ kit that came to me missing the front hoop and t-rods. I have t-rods but the threads are different. I have inserts to fit the t-rods. Problem is, the hexagonal part of the insert won’t catch on the walls of the lug, therefore allowing it to spin when you go to tighten the t-rod.

Any of you guys ever make any modifications to the insert to fix this problem. If so then how? I have tried a few things like trying to place a washer over the insert and bend it over the hex portion, not much luck with that. I know the real answer is to get the proper inserts or t-rods but I really need to get this kit done so I can sell it, we need the money bad.

Next question, if I do want to get the correct inserts or t-rods, how do I figure out the size and thread count? I assume these are metric (a Ludwig rod wont fit) but they seem to have different sizes also. I have been looking for a thread measuring gauge but no luck there either. And, where could I get the parts quick?

Thank you,

Jeff C

Thought I would provide some photos to help tell the story.

Far left pic is the origional t-rod, if I had four of these my problem is solved.

next is the inside of the lug I am using

next is the rod with insert that wont work with the lug

last is the exterior of the lug I am using.

Thank you,

Jeff C

Jeff I have some inserts like the ones in pic #1. If you need some I'll send them to you free. They are coarse thread and came in the Slingy MIJ knockoff lugs I have. If I'm reading this whole thing right it should solve your problem??

Thank you, but I have the inserts in pic 1 but I only have two rods to fit those inserts. I have other rods ( other pic) with inserts but the inserts dont work with the lug. Hope this makes sense.

JC

What I really need is 4 more of the rods like in pic 1

Thank you

Ok got ya now. Maybe glue/JB weld some metal shims on the insides of the lug where the insert goes. Build it up enough so she don't spin. Good idea on the bent washer just not enough to hold it. Hope you can get it sorted out easily.

Your welcome. I like the original formula JB weld. It's like a 2 part cold weld putty. Mix 50-50 and apply. The quick dry formula isn't as good. The tricky part is getting the shim thickness correct so the insert can still compress and move if your lugs have springs. JB weld can be filed/sanded/xacto knife to remove excess if need be. Good luck.

Jeff - use the inserts that fit the lugs... and simply re-tap the inserts (re-cut the threads in the inserts,) to match the thread pitch of the t-rods.

Viola! Problem solved...

John, are you suggesting I use a tap to cut new threads over the existing? Have you ever done this? Isnt that pretty much cross threading? How can you tap new threads into an insert that already has threads? Never tried anything like that before. Im not saying your wrong about it Im just somewhat puzzeled. Thank you for the suggestion.

I must have gotten lucky then. Worked for me the time I did it. Maybe the thread pitches weren't that far apart. Now you have me wondering. It did work for me though...
