Sonor grommet removal

Loading...

Don't know if anyone can help me on this one. I have some Sonor Swinger beech shells which I am refinishing and I need to remove the vent hole grommets. The weird thing about these grommets is that they are rounded over on the the outside of the shell but flush on the inside. In other words they don't protrude to the inside of the shell at all. So it looks they are driven into the hole from outside and are press fit into the the shell or maybe stretched with a tool after inserted.

So, how to get out without damaging the shells. I don't know if any other drums are made this way or not but I thought this would be the place to ask. Sorry no pics. I can get some later in the week if it will help (travelling right now).

Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Are you trying to save the old grommet's Or replace them?

So you think they are possibly flared out to secure them to the shell?

That's a good question. At this point, I'm willing to replace them. I'm thinking a standard replacement grommet will work but then again...they're probably metric holes. The grommets....especially on the kick are a bit corroded anyways.

I would take a small metal file and slowly file away the edge... SLOWLY... It should get through it pretty easy. Then just work your way around the entire area until the grommet ring comes off...

Leave the old grommet shaft in the hole (hmmm...) until you figure out the new grommet... It might need to stay in place.

If not, the same method in two spots should get it out with no damage to the drum..

This is a time consuming process... Patience.... Wax on, Wax off

That sounds like a very good suggestion. I would assume that a small roundfile would be best.

Here is a pic from the inside of the shell

I always use this suggestion:

On his page you can find sonor eyelets too:

He is a very nice guy and shipping such small things shouldn't be a prob.

Did you get this sorted d-d?

When I did a lot of wrapping recently, I bought 2 new round files just the right size for lug holes and smaller screw holes. I blew one new grommet when I installed it and discovered that a round file took it out easily. Just go carefully and file the grommet away until it collapses.

Hey thanks trout. I'm still needing to pick up that d**n round file. I've been to Lowes at least thrice since then and have forgotten it every time. I've just been removing and sanding out the old wrap adhesive. It's a work in progress.

I took a look at the link to see what they were doing and that method will probably cause some evidence of the badge being removed.

Most of the time you want to show as little damage or tampering as possible and prying is not the best way to go about it.

So if anyone reads this, I would not use that method if you are trying to protect the interior of the shell. If the interior is not an issue and you are sanding and finishing the inside then this will work fine.

It requires a slow filing and gentle approach to get it out with no marks or damage.
