Tips for using grommet tool?

Loading...

Hi everyone,

I bought a grommet tool from Precision, and some repro badges and grommets from My Old kentucky Drums (B/O 3-ply). Before I actually use this tool, are there any tips?

I am not really mechanically inclined at all, so any help would um, help. I just don't want to mess it up.

Here's a clip that takes you through the installation steps one by one using the grommet tool sold by My Old Kentucky Drums: http://www.ebay.com/itm/EZ-DRUM-BADGE-INSTALLATION-GROMMET-COMPRESSION-TOOL-/370616814273?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item564a7bcac1

Fellow forum member KevinS was kind enough to allow me to use his grommet tool and despite the fact that I'm hopeless when it comes to ANYTHING requiring mechanical ability the installation turned out to be extremely easy. Believe me -- if I can do it anybody can!

There's also a youtube video on installing grommets with power tools but I didn't find it necessary to use any with my project.

Good luck!

I can't believe people actually pay up to 40 USD for this so-called "tool". About a month ago, I posted a DIY on grommet "tools" here at the forum, without attracting any notice: http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=29724&highlight=grommet

The DIY pdf contains two tools, the second one is the better and more refined. It will cost you perhaps a dollar in parts and will not be inferior to the eBay 40-dollar tool. Originally, these two designs were posted over at the Sonormuseum message-board by some very helpful people.

can you post a few pics of the interior side of the grommet, After you used your DYI tool for the install?

Sorry, I don't have any pics of that. I fitted those grommets some years ago and obviously never took any pics. But, basically, what the tool does, is that it bends the end/inside part of the grommet so that it conforms to the slope of the screw head. There is actually a very good picture in my pdf of this at the very end. My grommets looked exactly like the grommet in that picture after having used the tool.

Please note that the pdf contains two variations of the tool. The second and last one is superior, and is the one I have used myself.

the reason I asked is because I'm one of the people you are not able to get your mind around I paid for the "your words so called professional tool" and that is what I received, I do alot of installations.and most of the drums I'm working on are valuable, why would you take a chance to do it wrong.I've seen a boat load of the DYI tools, if that 's the route you wish to take fine, But superior to what?? the tool I bought is close to 10 years old and you'd be hard pressed to tell one of mine from the factory!!

Yeah, OK, I am sorry that I posted the pdf for the grommet tools. Please forget it. I just thought that it was useful information.

there isn't anything you need to apologize for that is always a good thing to do to show alternatives methods, but seriously I've not seen One DIY tool come close to the job than the one that sells on ebay by myoldkentuckydrums.

Your right Mark.

The DIY tool makes the grommet look like a sugar cone on the inside. Just snug enough to keep the badge from falling off. I broke down last year and got the right one on FeeBay. Same one the My Old Kentucky Drums sells.

There's no compairson.

Joe
