Ludwig Club Date restoration n°2.

Hi Folks,

Some of you might remember the Club Date restoration I did last year.

http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=21872

I decided to do another one,....

This one is quite a bit more ambitious considering the horrible shape the bass drum is in. Some people probably think I'm nuts but I have a bit of a soft spot for these lost causes,...

The top section of the bass looks more like a colander and next to at least 12 small holes, it had 2 huge holes drilled for tom mounts. (why two ????)

Also a considerable amount of work to be done on the interiors.

Bearing edges are surprisingly enough in good shape.

The pictures are showing today's progress.

Since yesterday, a 15"X12" floor tom is on its way to Europe. Also 10 T-rods & claws are ordered. Still looking for: a rail consolette and a base ball bat muffler for the floor tom.

The choice for the color of the wrap is still very uncertain. I'm down to 4 options: Gold sparkle, Burgundy sparkle, Black oyster 60's or Vintage sky Blue,... any suggestions ?

Regards Stef

Judging by your previous restoration I have no doubt it will turn out beautiful. Keep us posted on your progress.

Stedi - Nice work man! Looking forward to seeing it completed.

Quick woodworking tip: Next time, line up the grain of the plugs with the grain of the shell. It'll restore the structural integrity of the grain. No sudden interruptions for vibrations traveling around the shell.

Nice work, man. Respect.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Hey what a fun project! I have to agree with Mike on this one, gold sparkle. I had jamin sam send me a sample of their sky blue wrap and was not impressed at all. To acheive the best "origional look" I say go with the sparkles. Good luck and keep us up to date on the project.

Wow, Stef...yeah...pretty ambitious. No doubt you will do a fantastic job, though...already looking good! Cool on the 15x12 floor tom...nice vintage size. As for the wrap...my vote is also for gold sparkle. I almost wrapped my '58 in gold sparkle, but I already have a champagne sparkle kit and wanted to differentiate them a little more than that. I agree with JC...the new "vintage" sky blue pearl doesn't do it for me, either. See you very soon, my friend. I jump on the plane headed for Brussels in just 9 days!

Thanks guys,

So Gold sparkle it will be. I must admit that it was my first choice of color to.

What kept me from an immediate decision was the sometimes very orangey look of a "new" gold sparkle in many of the pictures on the web.

I hope that's just bad lighting,...

The BD and tom appear to be early 1960's, that's why I went for a 15"X12" floor tom. As the badges are missing, I'm not 100% sure but the 12" tom has the old style tom mount. On top,... they're about 15 holes drilled in the bass drum but a closer examination taught me that, none of them seem to correspond 100% with a rail consolette tom mount. The kit must have had the "screw on" type. What puzzles me though is the fact that the early 60's Club Date bass drums all seem to be 22", mine is 20".

Oh well, I will probably leave the bass drum virgin for now and go for a snare stand to mount the tom. Saves me a considerable amount of Euro's and looks cool too.

I have a great early Atlas stand that'll do just fine.

John, thanks for the advice on keeping the wood grain in line, we learn every day I guess,... that'll be something for the next resto.

OK,...

Had another close look to the holes in the bass drum and the removed wrap.

There was a rail consolette mounted but the hole spacing is about 1/2 inch smaller than the ones I have seen so far on both my '66 Luddies.

Does that make sense ?

Was there an earlier version with a smaller foot print?

Hey Stef...I measured the footprint on my '63 consolette and it is just under 4", like 3 15/16" or so. This one has the feet with 4 screws that we are all probably used to. I also measured the footprint on my '58 and it is 4 7/16" or so. This one is the older style one with 2 screws and no feet. Oh...and on a good note...I might have some spare consolette parts for you...let me see what I can dig up. I for sure have the hot dog with feet on it and the L arm. Let me see if I can find the other piece and it'll be on the plane with me next week!
