Will taking the hardware off a drum definitely make it go out of round?

Loading...

Hello All,

That may seem like a silly question, but here's my quandary: I have some old Slingerland concert toms that are worth lots sentimentally but not much monetarily. To make matters worse, the silver silk(silver metallic?) wrap has shrunk and is falling off the shells, peeling like old wallpaper. Haven't used these toms in almost 20 years.

I have a decent condition Blakrome tom that needs lugs, and I'd like to use the old toms' lugs on those, without having to spend extra money on new/different ones.

Is there any other way to avoid the drums becoming oblong without having a head properly tensioned across the shell?

Thanks,

Dan

A drum will not go out of round because hardware was removed. Many of us remove all harware for a "deep clean". I have done so many many times.

It's not an issue. I like to keep the same screws with each lug as you take them off. When placing them on the new drum do not over tighten.

Enjoy

Agreed.

Much older shells stored in extreme conditions without any head tension

( ie: an attic in Wisconsin ) can be at risk however.

Concur on keeping the screws matched. A number of Rogers and Slinger's

were assembled with the diabolical "self tapping" screw.

Shear off or cross threading is always possible.

A way OCD trick of mine is to then re-mount the least perfect

specimens ( those set on the pavement during tear down for

example ) on the side facing you.

Are they out of round now? You'll need to measure across the shell lug to lug.

Removing hardware won't cause it. If it's out of round, it happened over time.

Even if the shell is out of round you still can get a head on it and play it, it just takes a bit more effort to get the head on by pressing the wider sides in. Once the head is on, hoop it and tighten the rods.
