And the snare stand thing looks cool.....it really does.
Tom on Snare Stand??
I have to use a snare stand on two of my kits, one has a virgin kick and the other is my Super Classic which has a rail mount that doesn't go low enough for my liking. The only problem is having to carry one more thing in my trap case!!
I am going with minority by saying:
A.) anytime I have ever tried placing a tom on a snare stand I find that it chokes the tone. It is certainly better if you don't tighten the basket, but to me the sound is choked regardless.
B.) an isolation mount on a cymbal stand will physically allow for far greater placement options. Height is never an issue, and you can line up your first rack tom with your snare which is something you can't really do with a snare stand.
C.) a cymbal stand clamp is potentially less hardware than some bass drum mounts and certainly much less than another snare stand.
I do have to agree that the snare stand set up looks cool.
I just came off a tour where the drummer scaled his kit back and tried the snare drum stand idea. He was shocked at the resulting sound as it was quite choked. Interestingly enough, he opted to detune the heads to as low a pitch as he could get and then add more muffling than he had ever felt comfortable with previously. It fit the style of music so he decided to stick with it. After that tour was over, he went back to isolation mounts.

Yeah...I don't know why guys think using a tom off a cymbal stand will take up more room than a snare drum or even a rail consolette or other BD mount.
I use a tom off a fairly light weight straight cymbal stand. You can get the cymbal AND tom anywhere.

takes up less space than this:
Get a snare stand and Flex Frame for your tom. It'll resonate like a Rims mount. It works for me.
i have a 64 leedy with the diamond shaped plate on a 12" tom and that thing chokes the tom WAY more than any snare stand, I would not have thought it possible but at least in my case it was true, now of course I wanted the set to look stock so it sits on the consolette anyway, guess i'm a slave to fashon
for the record I hate putting a single tom off of a cymbal stand, it's pretty hard to get a point of reference everytime you set up. the stand could be off by a few inches and you have to re adjust either the cymbal or tom, it's just a pain.

The Flex Frame works on toms and snare drums. My 1967 mod orange jazz fest resonates better, good enough for me to use the snare in club gigs, and the 12 and 13 inch frames have brought 60's toms "back to life" for me.

Just checking, do you have a felt "gasket" between the shell of your tom and the spade mount bracket? The consolette/spade mount choked my rack tom on my green kit considerably...even the guitarists in my band noticed when I pointed out how good the drums sounded when I held it by the rim and how choked it sounded on the consolette. Anyway, I noticed that it didn't have a felt "gasket" between the shell and the mount. I couldn't find any thick felt, so I got a small sheet from Hobby Lobby and folded it over a couple times and it made a big difference.
Good luck with that!
