Premier Elite w/ Paiste cymbals

Loading...

This kit is still a work in progress but will not be being worked on for quite some time. I still need a few little parts for the kit and will be re wrapping it in a few months when I can save enough money. I am thinking of doing some sort of sparkle finish(probably green). I would also like to add a Paiste 20" china or 18" crash(or maybe both)and a Steel snare.

Premier Elite

13x9 Rack

15x12 Rack(sometimes)

16x18 Floor Tom

18x16 Floor Tom(comes in Tuesday)

24x14 Kick

14x5.5 Snare(I would love to switch this out for a Steel snare)

Cymbals

22" Paiste Prototype Ride

20" Paiste Prototype Crash

14" Paiste Sound Formula Medium Heavy Hi Hats

18" Paiste 505 Crash(cracked), 14" Paiste Sound Formula Medium Heavy Bottom Hi Hat, 18" Paiste Alpha Power Crash(cracked) as trash hats. These actually have a really awesome sound.

Hardware

Random frankenstands from Tama/Pearl/PDP

Pearl Hi Hat Stand

Tama Iron Cobra Kick Pedal

Tom Heads - Remo Emperor Coated Batter/Evans G1 Clear Resonant(though I would like to switch these to Remo Ambassador coated)

Bass Drum Head - Remo Powerstroke 3 with Falam Patch(will be Remo Emperor batter/Remo Ambassador resonant on Monday)

Snare - Remo Emperor X Batter/Remo Diplomat Resonant

It's not clear to me what the finish is. It appears to be a black wrap w/ some kind of royal crest. Why do you want to rewrap ?

Nice set, you should tell you wife you want it set up in the living room rather than the laundry room though. LOL

The moisture in there can't be good for it!

This is only temporary. I brought it home so I could play it with the 18" floor and 20" crash I just bought. It is going back to my bands practice space on Sunday. We took a weekend off because 2 of the members traveled to baltimore to see Electric Wizard(wish I could have gone).

Finish is flat black with Irish crests on them. They were like that when I purchased them. They do look really awesome but I am just not a fan of owning a black drum set. I either want to strip the wrap off, sand em down a little, and stain them some way for a natural wood finish or wrap them in a sparkle. Still not sure. The natural wood finish would look beautiful(Mahogany)but I am a sucker for Green Sparkle :D

I can see doing a project w/ a set that is extremely degraded, but not for a kit that is ready to play. Taking a wrap off mahogany shells is tricky, & often takes some chunks of wood along with it. It's also difficult to get the glue out of a wood w/ such an open pore texture. Your rewrap will never be as good as the original. Your set is unique,..why change it to something like everyone else has ? ( Just something to think about).

Just because the kit is playable and looks good in pictures doesn't mean it's in good shape. The wrap on the bass drum is scuffed and scratched...same with the 13 and 16 but just not as bad as the bass drum(18" is damn near flawless).

The hardware is pitted and rusty and some of it is missing(see post in want to buy section). I have already removed the wrap and lightly sanded the wood on the 15" rack tom and it looks beautiful. The glue on the kit isn't that strong and with a blast from the heat gun it peals off rather easily.

When I take all of the hardware off to be cleaned/replaced/re chromed I will just have a shell kit sitting around for a week or so. I figure I might as well make it pretty again by re wrapping or taking the original off.

If you like flat black kits and have something in the same sizes in a different sparkle I will gladly trade you :p

I also used to own a green sparkle kit in the same sizes and I regret the hell out of selling it. The kit sounds incredible...but I want it's visual appeal to match its sound.

Black Premier kits are a very common thing, so preserving one for posterity is not important. There are literally thousands of them. If you like having one in natural wood, go ahead.

Taking the wrap off a Premier kit is usually very easy, as it is only glued at the overlap. The reason why it still seems really tight is because Premier very cleverly shrunk the wrap with ultraviolet lighting afterwards.

Only under the overlap will it be glued, and here you will need to be very careful as the mahogany is easy to damage. You can apply some heat to help softening the glue.

You can treat the mahogany with for instance linseed oil, sanding them with finer and finer grains of sandpaper each treatment, while the oil is still wet. 4-5 treatment with oil should suffice, the last time you can use grade 0000 steel wool.

It will look like this, made by a friend of mine, Erik Frey:

Nice, eh?

This is how it looked before - and I think it explains why he did it:

Enjoy the process - and the result!
