Nice Acro find

Loading...

A young man from Iowa State University answered my Craigs list add " old drums wanted" I went and checked it out and here was this 1969 Acrolite in mint condition. I came with a case, and a stand , and a practice pad. I am pretty sure it has the origional heads. Got it for a very good price, just wanted to post a pic because this is the best condition drum I have found yet, it made my day!

I think Blair is just saying that this is the later strainer and not the more desirable P83. If I'm not mistaken, that style P85 was introduced in '69. So, it's correct.

That thing is super nice, by the way! Can I borrow your time machine?

Well I was sure that this drum is all origional, even the heads are Ludwig (see pics). And I know the term "mint condition" is misused all the time but I dont see a scratch or pit or ding anywhere. The seller said he has no use for a "concert snare" ,,, "its just been sitting in the case in my closet for years" So he sold it cheep just to get rid of it. The only issue would be the snare wires do not say Ludwig on them. Anyway, it made my day,,, I'm happy.

JeffCC -- Nice find! Now all you and your wife need is to have someone respond to that CL "want" ad that has a BUNCH of stuff!! :)

SLynn -- I think you're probably spot-on with your opinion on the date, 1969. What I can see of the serial number supports that. And, 1969 was indeed a transition year. The P-85 was probably designed for use with the B/O badge, but they seemed to have run out of the P-83s before they ran out of keystone badges. I've seen the same thing with the first version of the curved, retractable spurs on keystone-badged bass drums. So... IF Jeff's Acro IS all-original, wouldn't that make it MORE desirable as a collector's piece?

Hope that made sense as I'm just thinkin' out-loud again!

Yes the date is there, the first thing I did when I got home was look into the vent hole and there it was clear as the sun, June 18 1969. This drum is so nice I can’t believe its mine.

Bill, you and I think alike. I thought the same thing about the keystone badge and the P-85. I was surprised to see the P-85 and round muffler knob. So I am guessing Ludwig was in the process of changing badges and like you said used what they had. So this drum may be quite unique.

The kid had sent pictures of the drum but not of the strainer side. At first he said there was no badge, and then he looked again and said it was there and it said Chicago on it. I could see by the high resolution pics that this drum was in very good shape and decided that I will be buying it no matter what, considering the price. For what I paid it could have a Ronald McDonald strainer and it would have been a deal.

Do the drum head logos look original?

Thank you!
