polishing

Loading...

hi all.

i've read through quite a few posts before writing this. i figured that a lot of people polish their drum wraps when restoring a kit.

i am about to restore an old 1960s ludwig in champagne sparkle as well, and i'd like to give the sparkle back some of its shine again.

since i am not from the usa, i'm not familiar with most of the brand names that are used in all the other posts, so here some quick questions:

1. if you use polish, do you use regular "whatever" car polish or more the "mild" versions? polish or wax???? let's say for a drum with minor or regular signs of age.

2. when cleaning the drumshell first, is it necessary to use some stronger cleaner (or is it even dangerous to do that), or is it better to use simple soap or washing up liquid?

thanks

michael

Novus 1-2-3 seems to be a popular cleaner/polish system on the forum.

I used it on some blue sparkle drums that had been wrapped in contact paper and it did a nice job for final clean up and shine.

There is also an article on the topic in the links at the top.

Cleaning and Restoring Vintage Drums

I wrote that awhile ago and will probably update a few things that I have heard people try.

Remove the chrome and clean that with any good chrome polish. I like Noxon,

Use Novus #2 for the shells. Clean any dirt off them with mild soap and water and then apply and polish with Novus #2. The #3 is way too abrasive, and the #1 doesn't seem to do anything.

I saw the .de site suggested car polish - I would have thought it was still worth trying to pick up some of the fine Novus stuff all the Americans use. Should be relatively easy on ebay and relatively cheap given the state of the US dollar right now.

Cheers,
