Help ID Ludwig hi hat?

Hi all -- I just bought a hi hat on ebay (probably WAY too much). The seller has a 14 day return policy, though.

Sold as a 1950's 1121.

I tried to get a good look at all the catalogs so generously posted on this site, but could only find this footboard with the "button" feet.

There was a switch to the rubber tips, as on this one, but the pics showed the Spur Loc.

So... I'm curious. I'm also wondering about the wing screws on the clutch and the upper leg 'clamp.'

Does this add up?

this is the very last 1121 that they made. this came out right before the 1123 spurlock flat based stand came out. this would be early 60's right after the button feet that you mentioned. some of these also had the rubber bottom hi hat cup with the titler in it and some didnt. the button feet 1121's did not. the 1123's did. so, these are kinda transition stands if you will. these were made for a very short period just like the 1123 was.

nice stand! gonna refurb like you do or keep, sell?

i'd say anything under a hundred is a fine deal on that by the way.

Well, it certainly wasn't under a hundred -- But my plan is to spiff up a WFL pedal, too, and have a nice set up of WFL stuff.

I know it's a $ loss, but I've certainly done worse things. A LOT worse!

Thanks for the info. I happen to have a tilter cup, but somewhere along the line the nut inside the cup was glued into place... unsightly, but it still works. Interesting about being a "transition" stand. Kind of a rarity - not that that makes any difference to anyone but vintage drum lovers!

I may end up doing a refurb on the pair of them... the hi hat is in quite good condition. By that I mean the chrome. Everything else can be re-done! I just finished a really nice WFL for a gent in NY -- I wanted to keep it! I think that's what planted the bug to get the gear.

Thanks again, Mike

Mike -- I forgot -- what do you make of the wing screws on the clutch and leg clamp. It looks the same as the SK hoop clamp wing screw. From what I could see in the late 50's catalogs, it's the right one for te late 50's.

Or is it??

don't fret over what you paid for it. i was just throwing out a guide of my thoughts. the 1123 stands sell for 350 sometimes. its all about what people want. and that stand that you bought is just as good a stand as an 1123. if it doesnt have the tilter, i wouldnt sweat it. that version had it both ways.

looking foward to your usual outstanding refurbs on this one.

Good point... and if I ever really worried about gains/losses, I would never get into the restoration hobby!

And thanks for the kudos -- this one doesn't need much, but it's the details that add up.

Speaking of details, I think those wing screws are "correct." They are the same size as the wing screws used on other Ludwig hardware (like the SK pedal mount), but NOT the same size as the similar appearing one used on the SK hoop clamp.

Any thoughts?

And, hey, Shawn.... who knows what can happen?

I was just thinking about the refurb thing...for now, I'm going to keep this as a "daily driver." Presentable, but not restored or refurbed to the max.

At least for now....

I'm an old dude and played these 1121s straight out of the box from Damen Ave. I questioned the upper tube cymbal seat but on review of some old B&W photos back in the day, it appears correct with this clutch assembly. I have one tension spring left that fits the lower tube sleeve should you get serious about restoration. Mike "Mickey" Jones
