Help on Tom Mount Mayfair (STAR)

Loading...

I have the tom mount pictured below. No matter how tight the torque causes the tom to rotate counterclockwise into the BD shell. There is no way to lock the U clamp in position. I have seen others with a round disc with holes around the edge (circumference) to set an angle with a tab that locks into a This post has not tab or disc. The U clamp does have a small hole below the bolt. Ideas to maintain the tom angle are needed. Thanks MIJ fans!

Hmmm... I have the identical clamp on my Supremes and Tempos (stencils of Star) but, have never had this problem. Can you wrap some duct tape around the post so that it will fit more snuggly into the bass drum mount? Perhaps then it will be tight enough to make the torque count for something. I know that this is simplistic but, starting from the simple and moving to more complex solutions is often the way to go.

Brian, The L arm and U clamp are whats moving. The post is secure at the bass drum. The weight of the tom causes the L arm and U clamp to rotate down at the carriage bolt.

Oh, I see, Lou. I know what you mean by the disc with the holes. My '71 Stars have such a set up. Damn! Is the post on the l-arm checkered on yours? Could you make the mount for the l-arm tighter by gently narrowing it with a hammer over a buffer such as wood or rubber?

Brian, Got that working... Its the U clamp rotating on the bolt that is really the issue. The post just has a L-tab on top with a square hole for the carriage bolt. No way to grip the u clamp so it turns on the bolt wit little pressure or weight.

Thanks for the patience. -Lew

Hi again, Lew.

Man, there must be a solution. I see what you mean but, nothin's coming to me right now. I'll try to shake this old head up! Best of luck in the meantime, sir.

Try a rubber gasket between the U clamp and post. This might provide enough friction to to keep that parts from moving under the weigh of the tom.

Hey Lew,

2 options come to mind. First the obvious - not what you want to do - but you can replace the post to one that includes those locking holes - and of course change that corresponding U clamp with it. Not the original, but not as deviant as it could be.

Second option - just came to me - try doing a real good glue/cement job of sand paper to both pieces. Find some in black for asthetics and I bet it just might work. Do a good professional trimmed job in the event that someone notices it. In fact, it just may turn out looking like it was made that way.

I wish you the best with that-hope that helps

John

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Thanks John, I am heading down the replacement road. I think there was another piece, or something is missing. I have seen so many different style holders on the STAR brand stencil drums that as long as it is "period" I am not going to sweat it. I am using a WFL stand to hold the tom now and it kills the resonance. Maybe someone on the forum will have what I need. I will even convert the tom from Spade to L arm style if necessary. But not to tube mount. I like playing these out.

Luan is the NEW Mahogany!

I PM'd Mikey777 already. Thanks for all the great ideas! Keep them coming!
