The Cadi Green kit is coming along....slow - but I've changed direction

I was going to have the hardware on these drums gold plated to match (more or less) the original 9x13 tom. I've changed my mind - for now anyway - and will just keep the hardware as is. The main reasons are:

1) The 16" floor tom - it's out of round a little and the hoops and t-rods just don't line up enough to suit me.

2) The 22" bass drum is nice but I had to put a new piece of ply inside. The orignal was pulled away when the original wrap was removed (not by me).

Thirdly I just can't bring myself to drill the bass drum for the rail and cymbal mounts. Even though the drum has been refinished and the vintage value is not fully there I still like the idea that it is virgin.

It will cost about $1500, maybe more, to gold plate all the external parts. For now I can't see spending that kind of money on two out of three of the shells that are not 9 out of 10 at least.

I may change my mind though....

I have all the parts for the snare, bass and floor tom. The 3ply 6.5x14 snare shell is almost finished and will be sent from Pennsylvania soon. Same builder that build my LangPercussion shell is doing the snare........Will Tillman.

I went with a new shell because I was not having any luck finding one on eBay. When I did find one it turned out to be a 6ply and I sent it back.

I've lined up a local painter and met with him last week. I'm still going to paint the drums to match .....close as I can....the original 9x13 tom.

For now here are some family photos I took this morning.

I have the LangPercussion 7x14 sitting in for now. I spent the better part of last week threading and tweaking new Gut Snares on this drum. What a ritual that is haha. Got them almost settled in. The drum has Orchestral grade American White Calfhide on both heads giving the drum a nice full deep tone.

Casewell plating sells a few DIY gold plating kits (kind of spendy) and some brush on apps that are pretty cost effective. They also have a great forum.

www.casewellplating.com Maybe have a look and ask them a few Q's before you give up the gold plate idea. If this is going to be a stay at home kit you might be able to tint the chrome hardware with a gold clear possibly? You'd have to experiment a bit with that.

Can't wait to see the new paint on the shells too!

Thanks for the info. I will keep it in mind.

But I think if I was going to do anything 'gold' on the drums it would be the real deal.

One idea is to keep the original chromed hardware.

I have this 9x13 50's Gretsch tom (pictured) I won on eBay a few months ago.....it's a rewrap and in very nice condition. I love the finish but it would also look nice in Cadi Green and would fit perfect for this kit.

This way I'd have choices....

1) keep the kit in chrome

2) if I break down in the future and go for gold hardware I can do that.

3) OR just leave everything the way it is = no paint....and put everything in the dark hole of the drum room - wait till I die and my wife'll put everything on the curb so to speak. I say this because my wife wants to downsize and I have 5 drum kit....which includes about 16 or more snare drums and various parts 'n orphan drums. I keep buying parts on ebay that don't fit...or are not what I'm looking for ....and on and on.............just like a lot of folks on the vintage forums do........I think.....I hope I'm not the only one lol.

Who knows, a nice round 16" orphan 50's 3ply shell may make an apprearance....or even another 22" bass drum that has been drilled for cymbal and rail mounts and would fit better with the GOLD project.

Thanks for the Casewell plating information - that may come in handy sometime.

Glad to help. I agree the real gold plate is the way to go if you choose that path. Nothing looks like the real thing as they say.

Maybe i misunderstood, but did you say that you had the shell's exteriors rewrapped with a maple ply?

What Gary actually said was "The 22" bass drum is nice but I had to put a new piece of ply inside. The orignal was pulled away when the original wrap was removed (not by me)."

Looking forward to the pics when this project is completed, Gary!
