Help with snare drum identification

Loading...

Hello, I hope someone can help me identify the model of my snare. It looks like the Ludwig Black Beauty but it only has 6 lugs. The badge is missing but it says "Ludwig & Ludwig Chicago" on the rim. It is black with a copper looking rim and hardware. The part that makes the snare sound is broken and they appear to be cat gut or something. It has the same scroll pattern as the Black beauty but it does not read "Ludwig" in the scroll work.

Did they make the Black Beauty in a six lug?

Thanks,

Steve S.

Here are some pics. I just remeasured the width and is 5" from head to head and about 14" wide. It almost seems a very dark gray and not black.

Yup, it's a black beauty. By the stamp on the hoop, an early one probably made in the late teens.

Ludwig did not have a black beauty in the teens, this is probably a 1923 model here give this scan a look. http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/ludwig_snare_drum_catalog_pages.html and http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/images/other_stuff/bill_ludwigiii/ludwig_1923_3.jpg

Mike, good detective work your correct it's a later model than 1923 then. Also this is a 6 lug model?? I never seen a 6 lug pioneer like this one?

Its 6 lug because L&L had not switched to 8 lug yet...L&L didn't use the term Black Beauty until the 1930s, they used the term DeLuxe Model, the DeLuxe option is the Artgold hardware which is copper plated and gold lacquered to simulate real gold...the drum on the left is 4x14 6 lug, the one on the right is a 4x15 6 lug with gold plated hardware. I also have a 4x14 6 lugger with single flanged rims but no Ludwig Chicago engraving..."Long weekend/Monday morning" at the office maybe?

Ludwig had engraved snare drums in the late teens, I own one. Got it when the widow of the player brought it into Drum Headquarters. They contacted me. Her late husband got it in 1918, and she had pictures with him and the drum from then.

I'd love to see photos...
