Is this a one of a kind kit?

Tmyer2: Wow! That is such a cool looking wrap on what must be a scarce drum! Please do post pix of the whole kit.pbarrio: I'm interested in seeing the translation, thanks for doing that.

I will post more pics as I finish cleaning the drums and restoring what I can. Right now the FT is on Rims mount and the rack tom is on a snare stand. The old hardware on the FT is beat up pretty bad but I will be looking to you guys to help me get this kit back to as good as it can be.

Pablo, thank you for the generous posts on this thread! Can you tell me what kind of wood it is from the catalogue entries?

Translation of the only info found on Pinguim drums

“…Florencio and Pedro Roncon, a mechanical turner and musician, started the company in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 1952. Imported instruments in Brazil were very rare and dificult to get, so they decided to start building drums.

They first started building a copy of the Ludwig Speed King pedal. In the same year (1952) they made the first drum set using hand made bronze lugs.

All the parts of the drum sets where made in the factory, rims, lugs, pedals, stands etc.

Sales went up and in the late ’60 they sold 100 kits per week. They changed the lug design in the late ’60 from the “tear drop”design to an exact copy of the Ludwig lugs.

As stated by Robson Roncon (grandson of Pedro) “…Pinguim drums were praised by the Ludwig Company in an american magazine for being the only drums in the world that had the same quality standards as Ludwig…”

About the wood used in the drum shells:

No info found on the wood used. Maple and Birch are not common woods in Brasil and Argentina. My guess is that is one of the local woods like Pino Araucaria (Araucaria Pine tree).

This is a really interesting thread! I did an image search on google brazil: google.com.br, and got a bunch of great images. Hrer's the link for the search, http://www.google.com.br/search?q=pinguim+drums&hl=pt-BR&tbo=u&tbm=isch&source=univ&sa=X&ei=OlyIT6ynKqKOiAKCs9C-Cw&ved=0CDkQsAQ&biw=1067&bih=488&sei=W1yIT7iiNYWfiQLfse3tCg there were a number of articles, but all in Portugese or Spanish.

BTW, your drums are beautiful!

Thanks Brian! Here is a picture of the floor tom. Sorry Im not trying to be dramatic by only showing little pieces at a time. Im showing what I have completed in the clean-up operation.

Pablo, thanks again for all the info.

Anyone have any clue what a kit like this is worth? Even a ballpark?
