ludwig dating question

Loading...

I have picked up a set of Ludwig shells. the owner told me that they where dated 1967, with a black sparkle finish. He removed the covering and as you can see in the pics, the insides have been painted black :(

I have checked in the 60's catalogs and I don't find the black sparkle in the 67 catalog, however it does appear in the 62 catalog.

can anybody help me dating these shells. Also if you look at the pic of the bass drum spur holes, they appear to be at 90 degrees to the lug holes. does anybody know what type of spurs it would had had fitted.

this is going to be a players kit due to the fact that somebody has drilled a large hole in the bass drum for a modern type of tom holder.

thanks

From what I see in the picture, it appears that the type of spurs used might be the earlier version of the fold-in/out spurs used in the 1950s and not the 1960s... Also, is there part of the old wrap left in the joint where the outer-ply seam (or joint) is?

Sorry I'm not much more help than this... but with the pictures and info you have provided, I question whether these are actually 60s Ludwig shells...

Just my initial thoughts... at least one good thing -- the outer ply doesn't seem to have much damage from the previous owner removing the old wrap...

Yes there is part of the wrap in at the joint, it looks black, so I believe that it was the black sparkle which I think was called black galaxy. Ive worked on these to patch some areas that where damaged and I am going to re wrap them

I wouldn't worry too much about the spur bracket holes... just fill 'em in and redrill for whatever you want to use. Also, I've repainted the insides of numerous drums... I would suggest just going over the black with a stain/color blocking primer (such as Kilz) then repaint with whatever you desire. You'd find different thicknesses of paint from shell to shell anyway...

Good luck!

If there is a floor tom shell... the vent hole will be in the middle of the shell on the early 60's kits.. towards the top on late 60's kits. Can't remember the year it moved, but someone here will know the year of the switch.

vent hole moved to the upper position later on 65. galaxy was in the earlier catalogs but not in the 67 catalog. however, some have surfaced with date stamps as late as 68. shame that he stripped them. they'll still sound great though.

things are a bit weird, it might not be a complete set. I have looked up through the 50's catalogs and it looks like the bass drum is from the 50's due to the holes for the spurs and the hole for the cymbal mount

anyway I will post pics once its recovered. I have all the lugs, so I just need to get the covering. as I said this is going to be a players kit and I intend to get a lot of enjoyment out of it
