From Dule

From knowledge gained here on the VDF I think it is Tromsa or Roxy

For me you nailed it, Dule --- I suppose yes.

Roxy was a rebranded Tromsa , labelled principally for export. They went to N.A. , Australia, not the U.K. and occasionally show up on the continent. Your drum is a Tromsa , made before 1963 in Hellrot Flitter (light red sparkle). It is hard to tell on your drum but around 1963 Tromsa made some changes in their wraps and put only the really great fine grained glossy wraps on the top lines. I have several Hellrot Flitter drums and one kit is the most glorious red sparkle in existence and the other two snare drums ,made later are just o.k.

It is common practice in Germany , to use 4 ,5 or even 6 inch drums as marching drums. They have a clip on the top hoop(for the harness) and a leg rest on the bottom hoop. Yours has one oddity----it has a bottom hoop from after 1963 as a top hoop. Tromsa switched from using a snare gate to the two round holes, similar to Sonor and others. Here is a catalogue scan showing 4 and 5 inch Tromsa drums set up for marching ,albeit chrome models. This is a few years later ,when they had changed their lugs.http://translate.google.ca/translate?hl=en&sl=de&u=http://home.arcor.de/pfaue/&ei=lnNzT_K8NuLt0gHe_uz_Ag&sa=X&oi=translate&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CCUQ7gEwAA&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dekkis%2Bkuriostaten%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26hs%3DpY0%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-GB:official%26prmd%3Dimvns . go to Tromsa drums and percussion----catalogue excerpts and then marching instruments 1970's years.

NICE SNARE,But be careful with those lugs. They tend to split if you tighten the heads to much or put on 2 ply heads.I have fixed to many lugs on my set.Otherwise a solid snare. Good score,Vati

Certainly, the words of experience on TROMSA Vati! A couple of bass drums in my possession had 11 of 12 lugs cracked. However, that said, the repair is permanent , invisible and pretty easy to effect. The repaired lugs are better than new because they won't crack.

Single ply , 10 mil or lighter heads work best. I use original RKBs if I can but Coated Diplomats are a good alternative. Coated Ambassadors can work , as long as you don't want to tune too high.

I soldered my cracked lugs and the repairs are pretty much invisible.Plus I installed a little piece of foam rubber to act as backing on every nut,to keep it in place when removing rods .the nut will not fall out of its bracket. Vati

The drums originally had a foam plug in the lugs to keep the nut seated but in every one I have ever taken off( and that is hundreds) , the foam has completely degraded to a sticky block of powder. Presumably on the older drums, they used felt but I have never seen it.
