Purple Pearl Project

Loading...

Hi guys, forgive me for posting non vintage drums here but thought some of you might be interested in this.

Last Jan. I bought these Pearl Forum drums from a customers Grandson. He had tried to paint them years ago and was just wanting to get rid of them. He says they were purchased new in 2004. The drums came without heads and were in several peices. The post that hold the toms were not in the box of hardware so I decided one night to make a "virgin" bass drum. So I filled in the holes where the mounts go on the bass drum and the 13" tom. Sprayed the inside of the drums with a white lacquer. I used a candy purple pearl mixed into a level sealer to get the color, then topped it all off with a two rounds of gloss lacquer. I think they look pretty cool, cant wait to send a pic to Chris (the Grandson) down in Nashville so he can see his old kit. Any way here are some before pics.

Here are some under construction pics.

The purple snare shell is only half done. It took seven coats of purple and two clear coats. The snare drum was an old Pacific drum I had waiting for his big day.

I cut plugs out of 3/8" baltic birch plywood, glued, sanded and then went over with filler. The hats came from a nice guy in New England, they are sweet!

How bout the china?

My question about the "plugs"-The holes in drums are usually fairly raw-edged.How tight a fit were they?Did they have to be hammered in?

The china cymbal arrived in good condition. Thanks!

I made the plugs with a slight taper, a bit oversized. Then glue and yes, tapped down with a hammer ( just like plugging the lag screw hole in a newel post). After glue was dry I sanded them down flush.
