How to repaint luddy white interiors

Loading...

hey guys!

ok so i'm part way through a restoration and now it is time for me to repaint the interiors of my 60's ludwig white.

First of all - how do i do it!?

what paint should i use? how much will i need? do i need to put an "undercoat" underneath? should i use a brush? a roller? a spray? what's the best way to do it?

Thanks for your help!

What is the present condition of the interiors? Did you strip all the paint away, or does the paint just look worn? I don't think Ludwig put any effort into their interiors. The paint was nothing special, & the application was haphazard. I've seen interiors with very thick, globulated paint,.. sometimes so thin, one could see the wood, & excess glue spills showing through,... frequently blotchy. If there is any original white left , I would leave it alone. However, a thin coat of white spray lacquer will make them look nice.

the interiors were completely shot to begin with :-(

i wouldn't ever remove original paint unless it was absolutely necessary for the wellbeing of the drum, lest I be crucified by the Gods of vintage mojoism :-p

i wouldnt repaint them unless they were abused in some way. if they are just thin white and looking old, i'd leave them be for originality...

Everything you need to know, although I'd personally opt for a more matte finish than the semi gloss suggested. I did my sky blue kit with it and it was a little to thick and to glossy for the vintage look.

Hey, here's the key: "...completely shot to begin with..."

I interpret this to mean these are too far gone to actually restore anyway, but can be re-done with the "player" in mind.

Here's what I do with these types of things:

1) I lightly sand down the interiors to knock off whatever is loose and to rough the rest of it up to give the paint a good surface to adhere to. If there's any lifting or cracks in the interior ply I either re-glue & clamp or use Rock Hard water putty (and sometimes both).

2) I then repaint with plain, simple Krylon paint that you can buy at Wal-mart or any hardware store. For Ludwigs I use White Satin (not gloss, semi-gloss, or flat). For Slingerlands I use Pebble Satin (again, not gloss, semi-gloss, or flat). These colors are NOT exact matches, but close.

3) I don't worry about coverage, as both Ludwig and Slingerland were at times very inconsistent in the thickness applied, as someone previously mentioned. After all, we're talking player's drums here, not vintage museum pieces.

4) It depends upon how many drums and sizes, but I've found one can will easily cover a standard 22/16/13 set.

Here's a thread that shows some interior work that I've done:

Hope this helps,

perfect!!!

thanks heaps bill. and yeah - and by "completely shot" i did mean that the interiors were beyond restoration, and these drums were rewrapped to begin with :((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((

my other question was:

how did you paint the edges so precisely without it running/bleeding/spilling over the edge? like in this picture

mine would end up not being a straight line and probably end up going over the bearing edge (coz of shaky hands :P)
