Custom MIJ Bass Drum Head Logos

Loading...

Hey Gang; I'm a big fan of bass drum logo heads, and have purchased several of the adhesive logos on Feebay, and have been very pleased with the results. Trouble is, they seem to only offer the big brands; Ludwig, Slingerland, Premier, Pearl, etc. Unless you're lucky enough to score an old MIJ kit with the original bass reso head, then it's pretty tough to find one after the fact. I've been making some inquiries about getting some custom, rub-down logos printed. I'm an illustrator/graphic artist, and am fully equipped to produce the vector artwork required for printing, however what I require is good quality source material to work from. I've seen photos on the forum of some nice looking logo heads - what I'm hoping for is some decent quality scans, or high resolution photos of these logos, so I can create the vector files to have them printed. Thinking that perhaps there could be some interest here for these as well. Suggest that perhaps I could offer a free repro, rub-down logo, for anyone able to supply me with usable source material. Initially I'd like to find; Star, Hoshino, Coronet, but I am open to suggestions as well, (Apollo, Majestic, etc). Be interested in hearing from some of you MIJ collectors/restorers on what brands might be popular to reproduce some logos for. Thinking I could potentially offer these up on Feebay, though there would be a limited interest I expect, and could certainly offer them here to forum members at a better price, (all hinging on what it will cost me to have these produced). Really hoping you guys will help me out in collecting this reference material. Commented on an earlier thread by Skink, where he'd posted pics of his new Stars, with nice logo heads - been in touch with him, and he may be able to supply me with the Star and the Coronet logos. Just scored an original Stewart head that I've scanned, and am starting with that. Spoke to a local company, and it looks like they'll be able to produce the rub downs for me, and the price per unit will be relative to the number produced, so I hope to get some response from you guys as far as interest, suggestions, and most importantly; good reference material, (if there is a demand for something non-MIJ, I could look into that as well). Pics/scans can be sent to; dorzelblatt@hotmail.com. Thanks.

I have also looked into this.I had some made out of some clear very thin plastic with the letters done in black ink.The way you would put them on the head is by a clear spray glue.I had posted these logos on this from. The logos were not of M.I.J. names the ones i had made were Ludwig,Leedy,Camco,ete...I do have some M.I.J. logo bass drum heads i could take some good photos and email them to you..That is when my Computer priblems havr been fixed.....Mikey

Thanks Mike; If you could let me know which logos you have, that'd be great. I've spoken to a sign making place, and these logos would be the rub down type with isolated letters, (no clear plastic film) which I personally prefer - cleaner look. Will get back to you shortly with the photos of tom mounts you requested. Thanks.

Oh yeah - was thinking that 'Crown' might be a good contender for this, though I've seen about half a dozen different badge logos for these so far - wondering if anyone has a logo head out there...?

That is a great idea considering the number of MIJ enthusiasts here. Die cut vinyl is absolutetly the way to go. FWIW, I have found that kind of printing to be much cheaper if you can find a "mom and pop" sign printing operation vs. one of the chain stores. Fiscially, that would be the difference between making this a viable project or not.

Thanks to all contributors so far. This is turning out to be a fun project. First logo here is 'Star'. Thanks to help from VDF member Skink, I collected a variety of Star logos, and have been surprised actually, at the discrepancies between them. Top row pics are what I've based my artwork on - first pic from a forum member, can't recall who, but would like to give credit, and also ask, where/how they achieved their logo? Please notice the variations in the font, and layout of the bottom row samples...

Here's what I've come up with for the logos. Based primarily on Star badge logo - the version enclosed in the star graphic took some noodling and is my own interpretation, as I found the letterforms in the two samples to be a little rough, and amateurish.

I've had a few other suggestions and submissions which I appreciate and will try to address, but I'm still looking for more input and suggestions. Thanks.

Hello!

The pic of the BD with the logo is mine, thank you for taking it as an example!

How I got this on the batter is quite simple:

My guideline was a logo I found on this forum, one of the examples that you, DaddyNowhere, pictured in your last post.

Then I "extracted" the script logo with help of MS Paint, copied into MS Word and "blew" it up to the size that I wanted.

After that I printed it, cut it out and layed it on the batter to use it as my "master plate" - drawed the form with a pencil on the batter and, last step, filled the letters with a felt pen.

Forum member Ralf told me that he had done the same with his Premier logo, but he also worked the back side of the batter with the felt pen to have a stronger colour.

It took me about two and a half hours until I had finished the whole script including the initials.

Sure, sticker logos might be less work, but I had great fun doing this!

Hey Lissy - Great job! I have to say that yours was a major inspiration for taking on this project. I have a fantasia pearl kit also, and when I saw your pics, I said; "yeah, I want that". Appreciate your chiming in. Yeah, I've done a few things, (mainly band logos) the felt marker or paint route, but I have a few kits lined up right now, and thought, why not look into getting a bunch done for easy application? Thanks.

Great job so far!

There are so many MIJ names that could be done like this to be used when it's nearly impossible to find original logo heads. In fact even though "Star" had wide distribution over many years, the logo heads still rarely come up for sale, at least I haven't seen any recently.

I think this project is a great idea as long as getting it to adhere to the head isn't going to be a problem.

It's interesting how many variations there are in just the Star logo. They all look similar until you really look at them. The only difference I can see between yours and the BD logos are that the BD logos have a fatter "a" that is less defined, but then when I look at your designs compared to the metal badge samples, they look damn good!

By the way, if one of my fellow forum members beat me out of the Star badges on ebay Germany and wants to part with at least one of them.... I am desperate and need 5 to restore a set! PM me!

Great job DaddyNowhere!

Inspirational! I have scanned a very rare logo and printed it on to A4 clear stick on label. The result is good, but the label smudges fairly easily. I'm going to give your method a go (practice first on an old head) thanks!
