Sonor Phonic Plus Snare - 14x8 - Ferro Manganese

Loading...

I picked this up today. It is in need of a good cleaning. I gave it just a light windex clean to see how much dirt there really was, and there is still a lot on there.

It is the Sonor Phonic Plus d508x model from the late 80's - early 90's as far as I can tell. Ferro Manganese body and hoops from what I have read. The serial # is in the low 20XXX.

It is 14x8 and HEAVY. 10 lugs.

Any suggestions on cleaning would be appreciated. It has some pitting, and some dirt which I thought was more pitting, but some of it came off. There is some rust on a couple of the slotted tension rods, and a couple of little dings and scratches.

I believe it might have the original head, and possibly snare wires, but am guessing on that, of course.

Any idea of the value of the snare once it is cleaned up a bit?

Thanks!

Oddball,

Was that the Manufacturers suggested price? Or what they normally actually sold for?

Thanks.

Hi!

A few days ago a 6 1/2 steel shell Phonic snare was sold for 450,- Dollars (337,- Euros) on German evilbay, if this helps you. I think that yours might be even more rare than my example?

Snooter,

It is still disassembled. I somehow had a lug screw break off inside the ferrule on the lug. Luckily, I found a guy who will be shipping one off to me. I should have it later this week and will take some pictures once it is back together.

The shells looks great now, except for a few scratches and some dings. The pitting is minor compared to what I thought it was going to look like. Some of the lugs have more than others.

I think I am going to sell it. It is a great drum, and I normally would be inclined to keep it and let the price continue to rise. But, I plan on throwing some more money into the kid's college funds, and figure the proceeds of the sale could go toward that.

It seems like these drums do not change hands too often, so gauging the market is kind of tough. I guess it may come down to finding the right buyer with a good offer.

I am not set on a price yet, although I have had some inquiries. Any suggestions on pricing?

Here are a couple of more pictures from before I started cleaning it.

Thanks.
