The customer is always right....right?

So today I walked into Jack's shop and I notice a stunning 14 x 14 Rogers Floor tom in red glass glitter. It had a flawless finish and the only problem was 2 extra holes, presumably to mount a cowbell or something. When I asked why it was here, he told me he had to rewrap it in black diamond, despite how much its gonna kill him to do it! The owner justifies it because of the two extra holes, but even so it would fetch a super price on ebay. All it needs is the holes plugged. Hopefully he will come to his senses before it is too late!

Nope! The customer is usually wrong or not telling the truth! At least that is what I have experienced with 20 years in retail and owning my own business for 11 years.

My own personal version of that classic quote...

"The customer is usually wrong, you just have to make them happy.."

So right or wrong as business owners we have to bite our tongue and do what they want.

The customer in this case is not concerned about value and to them the right thing is to re-wrap it.

From Jack's perspective it is the wrong thing to do, but has to make the customer happy..

There are others in the business that thrive on doing the wrong thing to every vintage drum they touch, but they do it to keep the customer happy.

Many Rogers floor toms came from the factory with a swivo holder for a cowbell or other accessory, so those holes may not even be "extra".

Wow, I hope that guy doesn't find about that, at least it wouldn't make him seriously regret it as long as he has that "excuse."

Good saying though David, guess the other one can be thrown out the window!

Some people have over the course of their lifetime, developed an uncanny ability to live with regrets. And others..... develope an eyes wide shut oblivion from any connection to reality. It was a common thing for knobbies to be mounted to floor toms, including floors set up to also serve as a coktail kit foundation.

Whether anyone agrees with it or not, the drum does belong to the customer, and it is his to appreciate, or ruin, or change. That 14x14 rewraped in a hidious black diamond pearl just makes every one elses original 14x14 become a little more valued, and valuable.
