Camco Los Angeles in light Blue

Very nice score. LA Camco used generic hoops so it will be easy to get hoops for the drums. Most of the lacquer finishes from that era have turned to dust and have either been re-wrapped or repainted. I once had an LA Camco 22/12/13/16 in Alice Cooper White. I barely had to do any sanding as the lacquer became a powder!

Waaaw,... I didn't know about the bad lacquer on these Camco's, thanks for the info.

This one must have preserved pretty well then.

I found the kit hidden under a blanket in a basement.

The owner explained me that it has been left unplayed since the early nineties. I asked for the history of this kit but he couldn't tell me a lot.

He bought it for his son secondhand from a brass band in the eighties. His son played in that same brass band and wanted to start playing the drums but never did. He's currently playing Yamaha e-drums,...Toilet

The father also said that the former Camco company owner was aware of this specific kit and was in contact with the son about this kit.

Sounds very unlikely to me,...

Stedi - Welcome to the small but dedicated group of Camco lovers/owners. Best drums ever made. I have never heard or played anything like them and I've been knocking around drums for 50 years.

Enjoy!

John

Stedi, if you haven't already noticed your L.A. Camco's have a lacquer finish with automotive grade paint that was unparelleled at the time! No company in the industry made finishes as nice or as long lasting and durable. The A.C. White or Alpine white set I sold to Jeramy Stacey looked new still after 40 years...2 coats of clear lacquer on top of two coats of paint. The hardware on the inside of your shells dates your set to 1975 to 1977. They changed the hardware in 75 and started threading the shells where the lug hardware passed through. Very, Very few people know about that and its rare to find a set where someone hasn't thick thumbed/forced the screws back through the shells. Jeramy was fortunate to get a set that hadn't been miss handled and yours looks to be in the same condition... Excellent find, and congratulations on the find of a lifetime. Your kit is like owning a complete set of Roger's Maple Dynasonics, if they ever would have made one that is... The finest shells , bearing edges, and tone ever made, still to this day!!! IMHO

Thanks a lot for that info Slingalud !

Great to have a clear idea now about its manufacturing date.

The interiors look very clean and indeed, the shells don't seem to be threaded for the lug hardware to pass through.

Jeramy Stacey, waaaw,... that guy is a genius !

There are a few short movies on Youtube where he's showing his gear, a must see for every vintage drum enthusiast. I didn't spot the Camco kit however, that's a shame.

This is part 1 of 4.

Thanks again Sling,...
