Tasty Drum Solo - What's He playing?

Loading...

Absolutely perfect drum solo by Brian Bennett of the Shadows. His kit sounds amazing, maybe a Rogers? I'm blown away at the recording quality of the drums. He's obviously playing it live, but the are no mics or cables...but you hear every rim shot and bell...top notch.

Equally cool is his giant "snare drum" stage and the interpretive dancers. Best decade for music, ever.....

Really can't get a good look at the lugs, at times they look like Gretsch and at times Slingerland, lugs on the FT look unusually large.

The guys over at Mikedolbear.com would know.

Sound wise, the stage is mic'd (overheads and possibly mic's in drum stage)

That was in 1965. Brian Bennett had just bought a new set of Ludwigs from Ivan Arbiter's, Drum City. There is one clearer, closeup ,at the very beginning where you can see the lugs-----they look , Ludwig. The image picked directly from You Tube seems to be sharper.

A curious thing...At 1:02 it sounds like the pitch of his floor tom changes. The camera is not on him at the time...

Was there ever a floor tom with a pitch pedal, like a tympani?

The snare has a center bead, and looks like 10 lugs. The mounted tom looks like it has small classic lugs. Its really too grainy to see for sure.Nice solo though.

You may have a point. I initially thought that he was choking the head, like he did on the snare drum -----you can't really see.

The floor tom leg facing the camera is an unusually large elaborate rig---doesn't look normal.Meazzi, who also at one time had squared off Ludwigesque lugs did have a pedal control attached to one of the legs to affect tuning. They could be Meazzi. not sure whether Meazzi had those lugs in 1965 though.

I don't think Meazzi ever had triple flange hoops ,though. These really look Ludwig.

I share your amazement Lee H...I can watch it over and over...that tuning is really dialed in and he makes it look so effortless....His snare chops are so damn good...

While I don't think he's playing one, I have seen floor toms with tympani pedals on them.

I think the lugs were specially angled, with a hole behind them that allowed the rod from each lug to meet at a center-point inside the drum. the there was some lateral rod that exited the drum and connected to pedal... or something like that.

It's odd - I'm sure it was a double-headed floor tom, but I can't remember how the rod left the inside of the drum to reach said pedal.

Since waaaay back then, I may have seen the drum only once more. Didn't know if it was a custom job or what.
