Vintage Premier Owner-Introduction

Loading...

Hello everyone,

This is my first post on this forum. After having my drums in storage for many years, I have recently set them up and started playing again. I was curious if others were interested in them so did a bit of a web search. I should have known that, as with every other passion, there would be a whole web site devoted to vintage drums. How great is that! Here is my reason for being here…. I am the proud owner of a set of vintage British Premier Drums. I do not need to speculate about their past history because I have owned them since brand new. I may be off by about a year as to their manufacture date since I am dating them by my recollected age at the time. I see that there are some enthusiasts here who are very good at dating vintage kits so feel free to chime in about what you see in the photos.

About my drum set; I got the snare in about 1964, a chrome Royal Ace 6.5” x 14" with the floating parallel strainer. A year or so later I got the Premier set in aquamarine sparkle either 1965 or 1966, 14” x 20” bass drum, 8”x 12” hi tom, 15”x 16” floor tom. A couple of years later (probably 1967) I added another matching 8”x 12” hi-tom and a 14”x 14” floor tom. They have slightly different badges and the mounts for the hi-toms are different also due to a hardware change in those years. The original Premier cowbell and stand that came with the kit is still there. There are no real issues with the set other than some fading to the finish and the base drum hoops need to be re-painted. Most of the heads are still original and that Premier chrome still looks pretty good after all those years! Cymbals are a 20” Avedis Zildjian Ride, an 18” Avedis Zildian Dance Med-Heavy, and the lower end Premier Zyns for the hi-hat (never did get those Zildjians that I wanted!) The stick holder is made by Rogers and purchased about 1966. They still need a good cleaning, just gave them a quick dust off for now. Hopefully the photos turn out okay. From Vancouver Island on Canada’s west coast….it’s nice to be on board here!

Welcome,...

What an absolute gorgeous drum you have there.

I guess not many people can say that they still own the first drum they ever purchased,... you're a very lucky man !!!

That snare is simply incredible.

Hello CBC and Welcome to "VDF group"!! :)

You're not only one exactly the same...

Your set is exellent.

Premier 60's - one of the cult drums around the world. When kits like yours were firstly imported in Russia in the end of 60's it was indeed a revolution in drum market quality. I love 'em and Ace parallel snares especially.

Cheers,

George.

... and even the rubbers are still on the bass drum spurs! Great kit, mate!

BTW: you better should have started your introduction in the section 'Drum Set Gallery'. It surely has the right to be there!

Welcome Brother! I have a kit similar to yours, a bit older, same color as well. (Best color ever made! IMHO).

Welcome CBC!

Love that kit. Awesome stuff! I love how well you've taken care of it. The snare looks like it was new yesterday.

I love that color. My first kit was a Ludwig Standard in Blue Mist and I have been a sucker for turquoise/aqua sparkles ever since.

Glad you're here, and thanks for sharing these gorgeous drums!

Well, I'm sending a bit of envy your way! Those Premiers are wonderful. For a trade I can offer two Slingerland kits one Ludwig and my first born child!
