Vintage Premier Grey Shimmer

Loading...

Hi all,

First post and I'm looking for some info so any help is appreciated in advance. I'm wanting to restore my old premier set I recieved as a kid from my parents. I've taken some pics and would like to know if anyone know what year its from. I perused the catalogues, but couldn't exactly discern which year it would be. Also, someone signed the inside of the tom tom, dated 3-3-70. Anyone recognize the signature?

I have what I think are original cases too. Pics of those are included. Also took pics of the hardware and badges. Hopefully that will help. Also, the heads are metric size, not standard. The sizes in general are 23" base, 16.5" floor tom and 12" tom.

Here's the pics...

Hello and Welcome

Your's is a '202 Outfit', surely from the mid of the 60s. As far as I know, the metric sizes have not been produced in the 70s. I own a grey shimmer, too, and there are no manual signatures inside of any shell. Also the washers inside of the shells are differing from yours (mine must have been produced between 1968 - 72, and it has international size drum heads).

I would love to have those matching cases!

'Grey shimmer' is my favourite wrap, btw.

Please kindly make some pics of the hardware, too!

Ralf

Beautiful drum kit and cases !

I wish I could have received a kit like that when I was a youngster.

Absolutely stunning in that finish!

Ralf, I'm still learning myself so forgive my ignorance but wouldn't the "new style" logo place the drums more towards 1970's?

Stedi, your (like everybody's) question/s is/are welcome, always. This wonderful forum is vivid only when issues can be discussed - and I'll surely never take the position of the omniscient-ist!

Not sure, but I think that Premier started adding 'production numbers' (attention: wellknown everywhere for NOT being serial!) to the badges around 1970. These badges here apparently do not content numbers on the badges, if I'm right.

Perhaps this was one of the very last kits in the late 60s, before Premier changed size of the head diameter, internal washers and badges. Also my grey shimmers have mahogany shells with beech reinforcing rings.

Hi guys,

Wow. Thank you for the quick replies everyone. I thought it was probably the 202, but my base drum doesn't have the disappearing cymbal holder as pictured in the catalogues, so I was confused. Maybe it wasn't originally purchased with that option if that was possible?

I'm not sure what the type of wood is that was used in construction.

I'll take more detailed pics of the internals and post as well.

I believe I have the original hi-hat stand as well as at least one original cymbal stand. I don't think the base drum pedal is original. I'll post that as well. The original cymbals are long gone. I seem to remember as a 7th grader many, many moons ago that the cymbals were a mish mash of paiste and zilgian (spelling?).

I recieve the set in 1985 for Christmas when my parents we assigned to London for one year when my dad worked for GE. I'm sure they got it very cheap at the time. It was the era of 10 piece double base drum kits such as the likes of Tommy Lee with Motley Crue, so old 3 piece jazz sets were probably not in demand at all.

Another question I have is does anyone know what snare would most likley have come along with it? The snare I got with it was a cheap japanese knock off thats just a shell now. I'll need to get a new one.

Thanks again for the replies and help.

Hi Riyan,

Depending on its age, I believe your kit should have come with a Royal Ace (before 1966) or a 2000/2001 model (later),... not sure though,...

What makes me believe that your kit is late 1960's is:

- Modern "P" logo (sans serif).

- Black hoops

- Grey shimmer finish

In the 1966 catalog non of the 3 seem to be there.

The interior looks birch to me.

Please post some more pictures.

The non disappearing spurs is intriguing.

Riyan, the spelling is 'bass drum', and some cymbals' name is 'Zildjian'.

Agree with Stedi concerning the recommended snare drums. I'm still eager to add a '2001' (= the wooden version of the metal '2000') in the matching grey shimmer one day.

But that's a luxury problem (for me), as I already own a '2000' with an Aluminium shell: one of the best snare drums ever and still highly appreciated everywhere.

If you find a 'Royal ace', which is the predecessor of the 2000/2001: that the 'correct' snare drum for your kit, but I'd consider a 2000 as well, as a 'Royal ace' may have never been produced in grey shimmer (don't know). And if so, that will be extremely rare and quite costy.
