70s CB-700 kit

Loading...

Dude that is sweet looking. I'm going to be rewrapping my kit but that is awesome. During those years with the round lugs, CB-700 had a lot better quality, I think someone said they were being built by Pearl at the time, however Kaman swears up and down they had CB-700 the entire time.

I've heard the same thing, that Pearl was building them in the early days. Also, their early branded (CB 700) cymbals were made by UFIP. I'm sure they were lessor quality, but the ones I've had didn't sound awful. I thought they sounded better than today's B8 stuff.

I'm in Clovis, near Fresno BTW. How's stuff down in your end of the valley?

Pretty good down here, I'm heading up to Fresno to pick up some drums this weekend.

My CB-700 14" Hi-Hats and 18" Crash/Ride is awesome, they are the old vintage ones that were good quality. These were not cheaply made and are pretty heavy duty, lasted me through several tours, I got them used with my kit in 1988 so they've lasted a long time. Max Reese who engineered for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Big House and Korn worked at Fat Tracks Studios here in Bakersfield from the early 90s until they closed a few years ago, He loved my CB-700 Hi-Hats He said they were clear but didn't cause any bleed through during our sessions.

Cool! Can't wait to see it. I've got a ton of stuff going on this weekend, but look me up if you have a moment while you're in town.

One more thing.....

Fishwaltz or Steveund - do either one of you have any CB700 crash cymbals you are willing to part with? I am seeking a 16 to match my 18.

Thanks,

John

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Unfortunately, it appears as if Wikipedia is the main perpetrator of the notion of UFIP making CB-700 cymbals. I was looking at a pair of CB-700 hats out of curiosity from a man selling them on a website. Pretty cheap for hats, but not enough that I am going to risk buying something that is less than awesome. He described these hats as better than the new B8s, but similar to the old Ludwig Standard by Paiste line. So I sent pictures to UFIP and asked them if they could help identify them. You will notice that these have very distinct lathe pattens that are about 1-1/2 to 2" apart. From a distance you just see the little rings. These were NOT made by UFIP, as a gentleman at the company named Alberto told me. He said he he would not be any help identifying them as they were never part of their production.

Also, in hearing people who play them describe them, they always use words like "decent" or "not half bad." If they were indeed even a UFIP stencil brand, you would be using words like "amazing." These cymbals simply are not UFIPs.

My guess? Probably Tosco.

I say, if anyone has cymbals that they think sound good, then play them. Just know that the CB-700 cymbals are not from UFIP.
