Classic Birch or Maple?

Loading...

I recently traded for a set of 1996 Ludwig drums (not so vintage). I was wondering what the opinions are on these kits and if there is a way to tell if they are birch or maple. The guy I traded them for thinks they are birch, but just because he thinks they look birch, so...

Any help is appreciated!

Silver Monroe Keystone badges = birch.

I think all the birch kits came with small classic lugs and Elite

spurs and tom holder.

Hope this helps.

Hey Michaelwray,

That is very helpful! The badges are silver, so they are birch. There always seems to be a little trick to proper identification...:)

I've heard that some Ludwig kits had poplar mixed in. These are 4 ply shells. Do you know anything about that?

Thanks for your help!

As I recall, the Classic Birch shells were 7 plies / 7 mm thick and a

mixture of Finnish Birch and Italian Poplar, although I don't remember

the layup sequence.

I'm pretty sure these are 4 ply. I'll have to take a picture and see if that helps. Thanks again! Guitar Dude Man
