Need advice: Ludwig Clubdates - rewrap project

Loading...

I have been frutilessly looking for a reasonable deal on some mid 60's Ludwigs. On the DFO forum I saw a post for clubdates that had been lacquered in PURPLE a few owners ago. The guy selling was really nice explaining everything about them and posted some pics. The mounted tom is 14x10 (which is rare apparently), and the bd is 22x14. Those are both Clubdates, prob 60's. The floor is a 16x16 6 ply, non Clubdate and from the 70's. Theres no badges on any of them.

Here's the thread with pics: http://www.drumforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=30351

He's asking $300 now before he puts it on CL, and I have been pricing wraps at Jammin Sams. I am looking at being close to $600 after shipping and the wraps. I have no idea what badges would run. On top of that I have to do the work myself.

So I have 3 questions I'd like some opinions on:

1. At what price point does this not become worth it to do? I am not married to Clubdates, but I would prefer to have a 3 ply floor.

2. What would be some period correct finishes for a 60's era Clubdate? I am thinking WMP. The Vintage Pearl is $206 before the tape, hoop strips and shipping. Their bargain WMP is $137 before the added costs.

3. If $600 is my budget, should I just hold out and keep looking? I decided I don't want a Standard kit, not fond of the lugs or badges so I know $600 will be tough for some classics.

Thanks in advance!

My 2 cents:

Don't waste your time and money on that kit. First of all, re-wrapping using the tape method is a terrible choice. That method is easy, but inappropriate and doesn't yield good results...which, essentially, would end up a waste of all the money it would take to do it.

My advice is to be patient, up your budget to $1K and get a nice, original kit that will continue to increase in value over the time that you own it.

As far as "rare" goes...I associate the Clubdate configuration as being a 12/14/20 with center-mounted bowtie lugs. I don't know of any Clubdates that utilized a 10 X 14 tom tom or a 22 bass drum....but mmmmaybe they did come in all sizes. I reeeeaaallly need to get one of those CD ROM things with all the old catalogs!

I know a guy with a blue sparkle 3 piece, don't know if it has a snare or not. I think they are 1966 and he wants 800.00 for them. If you are interested let me know and I'll find out if they are still available.

Thanks Lucky! Unfortunately, Blue Sparkle is my least favorite color, so I will pass, but I really appreciate the lead. If you hear or know of anything else, let me know. I am looking for WMP, or an oyster or diamond pearl, and almost any other sparkle other than Blue.

Seems like everywhere i turn theres a blue sparkle kit!

Yes, that's true. Blue sparkle is a very common color. That has both good and bad points. The bad point is that it's common. The good point is that you can almost always find "matching" drums if you are piecing a kit together. Also, blue sparkle tends to be a very stable color that doesn't fade as badly as some other sparkle finishes...

I often see BDP drums, lately. WMP is a little more difficult to get because of its association with certain famous drummers like Buddy Rich.

Are you looking for specific sizes/configurations?

I figured it might be one of the common colors. I'd be looking for a 3 pc ( 4 pc if it came up would be ok too). 12 or 13, 16, 22. No need for a snare, I've got an Acro, Supra and SS.
