New member needs Olympic help!!

Hello everybody! I'm new member, and could use some 'Olympic' sized help!!

Q: Anybody out there own, or ever seen a *7-hole* 16-inch 'pre-international' rim? I've got an Olympic (Olympic is the lower-priced line of Premier drums) 16" floor tom in wmp from the late 50's I want to restore, and there are 2 huge problems:

1) The drum is what's called a 'pre-International' size, which means it's just a little larger in diameter than 16 inches. I can get heads from Remo I believe?

2) The drum is missing the bottom rim, and as previously mentioned, it's got 7, count-em, * 7 * holes....not 6, not 8, but *#&#(@ 7!!! I've tried posting on an English vintage drum site looking for one but so far no luck. When I took the remaining top rim off to clean it and then put it back, I nearly drove meself crazy trying to find the 8th tension rod....until I counted the lugs and discovered there's only 7 of them! Now, why would anyone make a 7-lug drum?!?

Having said all that, this is a beautiful drum. The lugs are small and look like old Premier lugs, well they probly arethe same lugs as Premier. The shell looks like a 3-ply maple, but the reinforcing rings are quite thick, like a half-inch. It still has the original calfskin head on top, but I broke that years ago. However as I recall, this floor tom has a fabulous tone and bottom-end.

Any help I can get to find a rim and/or pre-international heads would really be appreciated! Jimmy

Hi Jimmy,

In the UK you might want to try Lous Dias at Supreme drums (google em). He has a lot of vintage spares for very old kits.

Yes you can order pre int heads from remo still. I believe you can get both pinstripe and ambassador models.

Hi, Jim. That's a rare one! I can't offer you any help finding one of those, but you could also try posting this query in the "Non-USA" drum section, as well. There is a fellow named Mike Ellis (who is in England) and he may be able to steer you in the right direction. Good luck!

Also...you might try contacting Gary Noonan of Noonan Custom Drums in London. He is a very well-known and highly-regarded custom drum builder and he may have some connections for stuff like the rim you are looking for.

Another thing you might consider doing in the meantime is using a single-flange rim with clips. A single-flange rim with clips will probably be pretty easy to find....at least easier than finding the appropriate 7-hole rim you are looking for. At least that way, you could use the drum as a 7-lug drum without going to any drastic measures!

EDIT: Whoops! I started talking about snare drum rims....I re-read the post and edited out the snare drum references.

You can also look up a company in England called DM Drums that has alot of Premier parts. I spoke to a guy there when I needed help getting info on my mid 60's Premiers. He was super nice and very helpful. I dont recall his name, but I think he posts on this board.

Hi O-lugs, and thanks! I'll give Gary Noonan a shout. Great idee about trying a rim with claws, if I could find a rim that's 'pre-international' size that is, hhehehehehehe Jimmy from Twangtown Stage Band2

The Mike Dolbear vintage forum (Dolbear mentioned previously) is awash with all manner of Premier and Olympic expertise (and I would suspect, spares as well).

Thanks David!

but I've registered with the U.K. site Mike Dolbear and posted a wanted message about a month ago and have had no replies. Maybe the limeys don't wanna help out a Yank (actually I'm a rebel, hehehehehe)

I'll try looking there agin.

Jim,

I'm curious as to what the actual measurement of "pre-international" is in comparison to "international". If it's just a fraction larger, then I don't think a single-flange rim would be a problem. In my experience, most drums that came with single-flange rims were for drums with calfskin heads -which often had fatter flesh hoops. For example, I have an old Sherwood snare drum from the 1950's and a standard calfskin head wouldn't go onto the shell....I had some custom calfskin heads made by Rob Cook and that solved the head fitting the shell problem. But my point is that the single flange rims must have been slighter larger diameter, anyway. So, a regular, old single-flange might just work in a pinch....?

That aside, maybe someone like Gary Noon could make you a single-flange rim that would be the right size. He's a master of metal working! Or maybe someone more local might be able to do the job.

Maybe even a wood rim/claws might work. i don't think it would be aesthetically the prettiest look for such a drum, but it might get it up and running...and I think you could probably get a custom wood hoop made a bit easier than you would a steel one...but that's just my guess. Anyway...food for thought. :)
