Stewart Rail Consolette Placement - What Gives???

I am in the midst of detailing/restoring my blue onyx Stewart kit, when I looked over at my peacock pearl Stewart kit and noticed it had a different rail consolette location...These 2 bass drums are identical except for the wrap...In the first pic you'll notice that the consolette is almost centered with the lugs...In the second pic however, it is almost centered with the badge...There are no extra holes in either bass drum...

Has anyone seen this before with MIJ bass drums? I would have thought that they would have used some sort of template to position and drill the holes, but, this kind of throws that theory out the window...I realize that quality control wasn`t a major priority when it came to building these kits...

Please, I look forward to reading your opinions...

BTW...The peacock pearl set is next to enter the detail shop!!

Cheers

Hello,

This is interesting. Maybe due to the small length the men in the production weren't sure about the best position ...

Here's a pic from my DrumMate, having a longer version of the rail consolette:

http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=24300&highlight=drummate

As you can see, it's position is more on top of the bass drum.

Maybe also, that the position depended on the deepth of the rack tom (more centered with a 8" deep rack tom, sidewise with 9" and 10" ones)?

Ralf,

Both kits each have a 12" x 8" tom...It's puzzling!!

Its my understanding why the mounts are like this.In your first photo the mount more to side of drum was a 4 pc set with a 13" tom.In photo 2 same as photo 1 a 4 piece set with a 12" tom.If the rail mount was in center of drum that would be for a double mount rail tom set,12" and 13"...Mikey

I would tend to agree with Mikey. The Star set which I usually play has the rail as in picture two, closer to centre. It is equiped with two toms, although both are 13 inchers. It would make sense to have it mounted that way. If not, your toms would be positioned to one side of the centre of the bass resulting in a very awkward playing poition, not to mention disturbing the balance . I also notice that your badges are stamped with the names facing the drummer. My three sets of MIJ's are also similar. To me, it seems like the badges should face the audience. Ralf and I have discussed this but, could come to no definite answer. A small point . Just curious.

Thank you everyone for the replies so far!! It makes total sense what you guys are saying in regards to the size of toms...I believe that the 12" toms came factory with the bass drums...Although, I wonder if they could have grabbed a 12" tom for the peacock pearl set instead of a 13" by mistake???

Great opinions!!

I can't find the missing tom for this , but I believe I've seen it sold as a four piece in an old catalog with a 12 inch tom...

Anyone ever seen this orphan tom out there?

Surfcollector - consolette placement looks like it was meant for single tom. Would think it wouldn't balance, leaving 13" too high over kick. Just my observation.

... Cooler as a single rack for that era anyway I think. Be better to look for a second floor tom... hey, 200th post, and I just turned 50! Wheeee!

Hey Grantro!

I have 2 Stewart kits with double mounted toms (12 and 13) and in both cases the rail is centered exactly between the lugs, no offset at all to either side.
