Early Super Zyn 20"

Loading...

Got this recently, early 50's Super Zyn 20". Heavily hand hammered, no machine hammering at all. At first I though it was an istanbul K until I saw the stamp. It has quite a large bell compared to an old K but the sound is defiantly similar.

I made a video comparison with an old stamp 20" K here

Please do not take offense ... that K (to my old and very damaged ears) sounds horrible. But, I like the sound of the SZ20. Pretty cool.

I love those older vintage hand hammered Super Zyns. And yours is a good example as to why. Great cymbal.

No offense taken Rogersling – K's can be hit and miss and

ones mans trash can is another mans jem.

Cheers Bill, I remember you have posted about the early super

zyn cymbals in the past. Do you happen to know what year

they stopped the hand hammering of them?

I don't know for sure, but my guess is that they were hand hammering in the 1950's just like Zildjian was and that they probably changed over to machine hammering at around the same time. Super Zyns first appeared in the Premier catalogue in the early 1950's.

The story about the Super Zyns is that in the 1950's, each one had a faint image of Mussollinni's face impressed into it, right out of the mill. . It made the hand hammering, for all those Italian P.O.W.'s so, much easier. but time moves on and memories fade so, eventually , machines were brought in and I still think , rotocast blanks, sent over from the old country. Rotocasting, doesn't remove the necessity for hand hammering, it's just less obvious. If you look really closely at the later SuperZyns and 5 Stars you can still see the hand hammer marks along with sometimes predictable rows of trip hammer marks---like the Zyns. The lathing became more precise and refined later on and the hammering was covered up by that.
