From OsakaBop

Love that wrap. I have said it so many times- Pearl Presidents are where it's at. Play them live, record with them- people will notice that unique sound.

Thanks osakabop. Do you have a set?

Nice drums OsakaBop! Love the finish and the drums/hardware look to be in excellent condition. I would like to find some real nice lugs to replace some of mine.

Someone donated part of a Bolero kit (20", 12" with a matching 14" snare) with a very similar wrap to my UPBEAT - Drums For Kids program. They are missing some parts, but are otherwise in decent shape.

I am sure you can if you just keep your eyes out- I have an extra President 13x9 tom in Orange pearl wrap that matches the second snare pictured there- I am on the lookout for the floor tom and bass drum- I lost the auction for the floor tom and won the rack tom and snare in a split auction- I was bummed but someday it'll resurface- just gotta be patient in the collecting game- good luck!

Yes I will keep my eyes open for you. There seems to be a great deal of drum kits that are missing the floor tom, what do people do with them???

Barry, I think the confusion is in the way the "Pan" badge is written. It really should have said "Pan Made with Plastic Fiber". The Pan line is actually a stencil brand. We had someone a few months ago that came across an entire kit, strangely enough in the same wrap color. The snare, although a technical match, is from a different kit, a "Pan" stencil kit. They are in fact Pearl Presidents, the only stencil brand we are aware of that used the President shells and hardware. If you would look at the picture showing the stack, you will see a different degree of fade, and that the Pearl badged drums are all fading to green, while the Pan is fading to a light grey. This is due to a difference of atmosphere. Again, although they are the same line of drums, all using the same phenolic shells, the Pearl Presidents are badged as such and the the snare, from a different kit, a stencil line called Pan, is badged thus. I do hope this clears up the confusion of what "Pan" badges are all about. As for our shared interest, kudos! It is a lot of work, but a labor of love none the less. If I have the opportunity, I will bring the candidate in and have them help work on the drums, cleaning lugs and scraping crud off hoops, detailing tension rods and screws. This gives them a sense of pride in ownership, not just another entitlement give away.

Jonnistix, I looked closely at my shells and nowhere is the name plate President. I have seen some drums with that name on them. Do you suppose that these should have had the President name badges on them or did Pearl make changes along the way? What year would you peg these at? Thanks..

HEy there, the Pan drums wouldn't actually say "President" on them or "Pearl" those were proprietary to Pearl- these are stencils using the same shells and hardware and sold for less money to a distributor who put their own name on them. It's the other clues that tell exactly that they are indeed Pearl Presidents with everything but the badges- that is what a stencil kit is.

All four of my drums have a rectangular plastic "Made by Pearl" badge on them. The snare also has a "Pan" figure and says "Pan Plastic Fiber" as well as the "Made By Pearl" badge. So stencil kits made by Pearl have this "Made By Pearl" badge plus the stencil company's name badge? Mine do not have a President badge anywhere.

I think we're getting a little carried away with the taxonmy/etymology, or whatever, here. Quite simply, your set was made by Pearl, with the stencil name 'Pan.' This was a name put on some import guitars as well. The disco ball design lugs used on your set were also used on some of the Pearl President kits. These lugs were used on other stencil sets as well, not just President sets. Also, President was just a name slapped on some of the Pearl drums. The earlier lines were made of luan, just like all the other stencils being produced at the time.

Regardng the President series with fiberglass/phenolic/plastic fiber/etc., I dont know if they were really 'top of the line' so much as their newest experiment. But they've obviously stood the test of time as they still have lots of fans today, like O-bop.

No, most stencils wouldn't have "Made By..." on them, but as the stencil era came to a close, it seems the overseas manufacturers were keen on playing up their main brand names and would want to display them on some of their better made, more expensive, or more innovative drums. This is likely why it didn't bother them to put a 'Pearl' strainer on a 'Pan' drum. This was probably less likely to happen 5 years earlier.

Last thing - I'm pretty sure your snare is original to the rest of your kit. They might have just been too lazy or too cheap to stick that same Pan badge on the other drums - stranger things have happened. If the wraps look a little different in your pics, I'd wager that it's just a bit of dust rather than mis-matched fade.

You've got a very nice set. Please be sure to post some more pics when you've got it all cleaned up and ready to play!

Thank you for the excellent explanation Cn679. I have pulled all the hardware off the toms and bass drum. I found that under the hardware the wrap was a silver grey color for some reason? I know on my vintage USA made drums the wrap looks like new under the lugs, so why these are different is beyond me? I have attached 3 pix of the bare shells that I have stripped so far.

That being said, the bass drum definitely has more of the SBP color in the wrap and the lone bass drum hoop's wrap looks brand new compared to the rest of the kit.

I'm pretty sure that you are correct with regards to the snare being original to the kit. This was a one owner kit before my acquisition. I had a hunch that many people removed these "Pan" figures from the drums. I know that brother-in-law eventually did on his WMP Pan drums. Back in the day (later 60's) those little figures made the kits look weird or cheap because they were made with plastic.
