Late 60's Pearl President kit "Pan by Pearl"

Loading...

Hi...

I recently acquired a late 1960's Pearl President kit made of Pan Fiber. It is a Sky Blue Pearl kit but I'm missing the front 20" bass drum hoop. The kit overall is in nice shape but I would also like to find some of the lugs which are chipped or scratched up. The kit consists of a 14/20, 14/14, 9/12 with a matching snare.

The actual name of the material the shells are made of, according to the catalogs, is "phenolic fiber". If those have a "Pan" badge on them, it is one of the highest quality stencils Pearl ever made, for another distributor. They are very rare with that badge.

Thanks for your input, I have read that about the shells. The snare has the Pan figure and I have attached a few more pictures.

Hi Retrosinic,

My brother-in-law bought a new Pearl President kit (made with Pan but with a WMP wrap) like this but slightly bigger sizes back in 1968. So I knew these were pretty good drums. I love the SBP wrap too.

Barry, I think the confusion is in the way the "Pan" badge is written. It really should have said "Pan Made with Plastic Fiber". The Pan line is actually a stencil brand. We had someone a few months ago that came across an entire kit, strangely enough in the same wrap color. The snare, although a technical match, is from a different kit, a "Pan" stencil kit. They are in fact Pearl Presidents, the only stencil brand we are aware of that used the President shells and hardware.

If you would look at the picture showing the stack, you will see a different degree of fade, and that the Pearl badged drums are all fading to green, while the Pan is fading to a light grey. This is due to a difference of atmosphere.

Again, although they are the same line of drums, all using the same phenolic shells, the Pearl Presidents are badged as such and the the snare, from a different kit, a stencil line called Pan, is badged thus. I do hope this clears up the confusion of what "Pan" badges are all about.

As for our shared interest, kudos! It is a lot of work, but a labor of love none the less. If I have the opportunity, I will bring the candidate in and have them help work on the drums, cleaning lugs and scraping crud off hoops, detailing tension rods and screws. This gives them a sense of pride in ownership, not just another entitlement give away.

Interesting that the badge should have read "made with" Plastic Fiber? I didn't realize that the snare was not originally part of the this kit? Like you pointed out, the kit is all made with the plastic fiber but only the snare has the Pan badge. Is it from the 1968/69 era? My brother-in-law bought his brand new Pearl kit in 1968 and it was like mine. Yes, if you have some pix of any of these drums please pass them my way. I need a muffler knob rod and nut for my snare in case you know anyone who has one? Thanks jonnistix.

BTW, my apologies for the late response. I updated my email address on the site and it took till today to get the verification email back?
