Is the wrap on your Astro kit the same as mine on the Pearl kit? It looks it in the picture.

Hey Craig,

They are the same, although mine has experienced a bit of fade compared to yours.

Man, jonnistix, you ain't kiddin' about those snare drums being killers! It's near impossible to get that Astro snare to sound bad. It takes every tuning and every snare adjustment like a champ! It goes with me as a backup for my Black Beauty on every gig and it frequently sees action.

Cheers fellas,

Ryan

Hi Folks... Pearl called that wrap 'Tiger's Eye Pearl'. I have seen the same wrap called other things by different MIJ company's (prob Pearl stencils).

Ryan: Wow... my snare is still sitting out in the garage, but I have been thinking about it. Frankly, I'm kind of amazed. I ended up with two killer snares from two of my vintage MIJ kits... The Astro that you've been speaking of came with the Pearl kit. I got the matching ten lug Royal Star snare with the Grey kit. That Royal Star is about the same, killer. I've never been able to get it to sound cruddy...

I hear ya, Craig!

Here is my Astro and my RoyalStar ten-lugger (HEAVY COS shell). They are both truly amazing sounding instruments.

"Tiger's Eye", although similar, is a different color. There is a Gold Grain Pearl that is maybe close, then Red Grain Pearl and Blue Grain Pearl, for a total of 3 "Grain Pearl" wraps, but the actual name of these red wraps is Red Grain Pearl. Please see this link for verification: http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/images/my_collection/literature/pearl/1969-pearl-catalog-15.jpg

I think the closest wrap color that could be confused with "Tiger's Eye" would be Gold Oyster Pearl.

Ryan: My Star COS is the same exact shell and strainer setup, but with 8 lugs. I am running a Fibreskyn 3A on it to control the ringiness and other than that, it is in immaculate condition. I pulled it off ebay, and it had been in a closet for about 35 years or more. I "won" it (as the one and only, lone bidder) for a grand total of like $20.00, including shipping. I was afraid it was going to be trashed when I bought it, but it came in just a bit filthy. After a good detailing, it looks like someone took about 5 hours worth of lessons and put it away for the rest of time and almost all eternity. Good thing I rescued it, or it would have stayed tere for another 40 years!

Nice jonnistix!!!

I hot-rodded the RoyalStar snare with a Dunnett strainer (fit the existing holes) for functionality (my drums get USED) and it kicks mighty ass!!!
