Hello MIJ experts...any ideas on the make or year of this beauty of a bass drum? There are no badges or marks anywhere...only a fancy vent hole. Size is 22x14.

I have seen a drum like that years ago in O.C not the same color...I don't think its a drum made by Star, iam thinking one made by Pearl in the first part of the 60's.I have seen the lugs and almost the same t-rods and claws made by them on drums.Badge would have been a sticker one so a name would be very hard to give.Mikey

Thanks, Mikey...at least that gives me some direction to start researching.

I forgot to say the one head looks to be calf is that right? are both heads calf?.If so I know of none M.I.J. drums that came with calf heads..So iam think most likey that the heads that were on the drum were plastic, back in the 60''s alot of these plastic heads were over sizes heads that Pearl made these heads were made like this a piece of plastic with two round metal hoops then they used a piece of white plastic to hold the head and hoops in place in place..Remo heads will not fit your drum. Two ways to fix that is remove alittle of the wrap with a knife around the drums edge or try to fine-{used}- these heads made by Remo i don't think they make them anymore..The heads are called "Stagemaster" these heads are alittle over sized way to know these heads is that they have a white plastic edge not the silver metal edge...Mikey

Yeah...both heads are calf...and appear to be original, or at least very old. I actually have another thread under Vintage Drums section asking about stretching a tight calf skin head, but also wanted to know if anyone had any info on this drum. The calf heads have no marks on them, either. I purchased an Aquarian American Vintage head which is supposed to be oversized but it still would not fit without cutting away some of the wrap like you mentioned. This bass drum also has no spurs, so I had to buy some hoop-mount ones. She's a cool looking drum and if I can get her to sounds good, then I'll be in business!

I can't see that this is a MIJ drum. There is too much attention to detail and it looks to be nickel plated, which I don't recall seeing before. The picture of the interior wood, looks like one of those Philippine Mahogany species ,though which is confusing. Maybe , the colour is deeper than pictured and it is in fact real Mahogany? The centre supports appear to be fastened with bolts. They also look like they have grading marks on the heads. Perhaps they are replacement bolts? ----if not, those grading marks would provide some clues as to the country of origin----or alternately, the thread. Are they S.A.E. ,U.T.S( STANDARD MACHINE THREAD) or ISO (metric) threads?

Did you do an accurate measurement on the drum? Is it 22" or some close metric equivalent, like 570mm or thereabouts?

Yeah...it's a bit of a mystery to me. I don't think it's real mahogany, though. Definitely looks like an Asian variety, especially since the grain on the shells (both inside and outside) runs up and down...not around like American shells. The wrap on the shell is also of the cheaper Asian variety, as it has a piece of paper underneath the wrap (probably to give it the "white" color) and it's held in place at the seams by nails. The shell is definitely bigger than 22", as I can't even get an Aquarian American Vintage head on it, and those are slightly oversized for vintage shells. I'll have to open it up and look at the center support bolts. It did appear that there were some replacements, though. What a mysterious bass drum...

Maybe a rewrap----but done a long time ago?-----hence the nails and the yellowing. I'd really like to know the actual size.

Ok, I think that the drum is a M.I.J. shell by a few things. The nails that hold on the wrap to the drum and the paper under the wrap...Back in the 60s i have seem alot of these drums that were M.I.J. useing nails to hold on the wrap to the shell at the overlap part.I have also re-moved the wrap on many drums that had japanese newspaper under the wrap.I think they did that to hold the wrap tight on to the shell..So do you think the paper you see is newspaper or a white color paper?...Mikey
