Well, they can be tuned to different essentail pitches. Also, one of the toms is mahogany and really has a distinct sound. But I also think, when you closely dissect a lot of Moon's playing during this era, there isn't that traditional high-to-low transition of tones across the toms. It's almost as if they are tuned the same and he just has a lot them so he can be sure to hit one of them when he's flailing away . . .

I know it worked for Moon. Yeah, you probably could tune three identical drums to somewhat different pitches. And I don't hear hugely high and low transition tones if I think about it.

I'd love to build a Moon set, myself. From what I am reading, you're pulling out all stops and I can't wait to see the end result!!!

Nice work at recreating one of the most eccentric kits ever!

The vintage Premier mahogany shells sound awesome, especially the 14" toms.

Last year I restored a late '60's 303 kit. Sounds wonderful.

Do you have the gorgeous flat based "Lok-Fast" stands to go with it? They look like they are right out of the Jetsons electricit

Those have to be the coolest stands ever! I'd use them, but I like the simplicity of my Stealth Rack system for gigging. Maybe for an upcoming Moon kit I would do those...

Yes, I have some LokFast stands: snare and three cymbal stands. I need to get a LokFast hi-hat stand (I have an old Trilok now which is a sore thumb on this kit).

Is that a pciture of your stands? My god those are immaculate!

Yep, they are as good lookin' as the drums. :) I picked up a late '60's 303 kit in "Silver Star" finish for a song and the stands came with it. They were as good as new under the dust. I have a resto thread on that kit if you do a search on Premier D303 resto

Glad to hear you have a set of those! The hi-hat is great! It has a foot pedal that allows the top cymbal to be held up quite high so it can be played independently of the bottom hat. Very cool...never seen another hat that does that.

If you look closely at pics of "The Who" concerts or pics of Moon playing, you'll see the "Lok-Fast" stands.

Combined with the Rogers "Swivo" mounting hardware Moon's kits were funky sights to behold!
