Expert help needed to identify another 5-piece vintage pawn shop beauty!!!!!!!

Loading...

This kit is totally confusing to me. Purchased at loan ranger in Ocean Beach CA, for 160 bucks. That price included the hi tom, medium tom, floor tom and bass drum. All of the drums have re-enforcing hoops.

The two brown colored wood toms I believe are '60s slingerlands (did not come with kit) and the snare is a mid '70s blue/olive Ludwig supraphonic that also did not come with the kit.

I purchased this kit under the impression that they were ludwig standards, but upon closer inspection realized that only the medium tom was a ludwig standard! If you closely too, you'll see that the tom is discolored from the rest of the drums. However, this must be a 5 piece kit because bass drum has a tom mount designed for two toms! So there's a missing drum somewhere!

The inside of the ludwig standard is grey and the re-enforcing hoops are a littler thicker than the other 3 mystery drums:

Perhaps the lugs on these drums can help us identify the make of these classics!? I feel so glad to have saved these suckers. They're going to get the best treatment and become recording drums. Anyway I hope you at least enjoy the pictures if you don't know the make! Take care.

You've nailed the one drum -- no doubt in my mind (from the pictures) it's a Ludwig Standard. Those are Ludwig Standard lugs, and the grey-speckled interior is also Ludwig Standard.

The other three are late 60s MIJs, either Star or Pearl made.

Another good find, IMO.

Wow, I checked out that kit in the O.B. pawn shop a while back. The tom is definitely a Ludwig Standard and I had pegged the others as Tempro. If you Google image search Tempro you'll see some in the same finish and lug design. However with non-badged MIJ's I'm never totally sure. Nice little score.

Nice! Ditch the Ludwig Standard tom, and you've got a sweet Candy Cane Swirl Christmas kit! Definitely a Pearl made set, by the way. You can tell by the shape of the lugs and the floor tom leg mounts. It could have had any number of names on it, or no name at all, I suppose, but it was made by Pearl all the same. Good score.

One last thing, though, you might wanna check with the Lud-heads around here to see if the muffler on the Ludwig tom is actually a transplant from one of the Pearl drums. It looks a lot like a Pearl muffler knob to me.

Agreed--was thinking the muffler looked wrong.

Currently playing for loud rock and roll gigs:
1982 Ludwig Classic in white Cortex, 24-13-14-18 + Coliseum snare
For quieter gigs:
Early '70s Whitehall Tiger Eye Pearl 20-12-14-14
Neglected but thinking about:
Early '70s Sonor Champions in Rosewood, 22-12-13-16

Yep, not a Ludwig muffler. At least the knob is wrong. Here's the Luddy knob.

Hello,

Although I'm really not a Pearl expert, I'd like to say that those lugs look like ones from a Pearl 'President' set. Some time ago I had two orphans with exactly those lugs, being the said Pearl ones.

Do those drums have maple interiors?Doesn't look like luan in the picture.I agree with the Tempro comments,as we've had several Tempros with the exact same wrap and "battleship"lugs.

That wrap must be really bright----it looks like it blinded the cat.
