Is this a good deal: Pearl Thunder King

Loading...

Hey,

I am going to buy a zildjian avedis ride.

And the same seller sells this pearl thunder king set for 165 euro's.

Is this a good deal?

And how would the sound of such set be?

Here's the link: http://link.marktplaats.nl/503373663

I thought that this set would be nice as a second set to try some alternative music.

Welcome! And it is indeed a bit of deal. If the heads where in better condition, it would be a better deal, and I don't think this snare is original to this kit. Seems to me the late 60s and early 70s had a different snare, most we are finding out today where chrome over brass, and they where/are beasts! One of my favorite snares, in fact.

Actually after going back for a second look, it appears this is the correct snare. This is a late-mid 70s kit, from the looks of the new style Taiwanese lugs. I would play it first, if at all possible

Okay and what are good heads for this kind of drums.

Do i have to buy vintage heads like fyberskin or can i just use an ambassador on the snare and for example evans g1 on the toms?

Use single ply heads and tune them to medium for a good start. Once you get the feel of how these shells work, you will find a broad range of tunings. They are not extremely loud, so if your are a metal drummer, these may not be your type of shell, unless you would like to invest about 40 hours tearing them down and sanding the interiors and brushing in some lacquer. Do not use polyurethane as it lends a plastic sound to your drums.

I'm normally a rock player, but i love to play jazz as well. And i love the look of vintage sets.

One more question. These wraps don't seem to fit so well on the toms. Is it expensive to put new wraps or something like that on the toms?

Well, it can be very expensive. What is wrong with the fit of the wrap? That almost looks like an original wrap, but you never know until the lugs come off. That is when you can tell how much fade there is in the wrap.

See this thread for another idea.

These drums will work well, as long as you are mic'd, for rock.

Well, I think there is nothing wrong but it isn't totally my style.

And if you look at the second picture you will see that the wrap on the floortom doesn't fit perfect.

But the kit looks great! I thought that i maybe could create my own style.

Thanks for the link.
