Please help me identify this snare drum

I think it's MIJ - the strainer and snares have Japan stamped on them.

No badge on the drum and it looks like there was never a badge on it.

The felt part for the mute is missing..........anyone here have one I can buy??

I picked it up at a thrift store today for $19.99. Wasn't looking for one but for that price why not buy it.

I was really surprised at how heavy it is.....solid little drum - 5(I think)x14.

Here's some photos.

MIJ, looks like a Rogers knock-off. You can make your own with a hi-hat cup washer, a fat cymbal felt and a machine screw, lock washer and nut. Cost, nuttin'! :) Shell cleaned up good!

I think your snare is a late 1960's to mid 1971 drum made by Star...As far as the badge it was a sticker badge one of many names could have been on the drum at one time..The muffler you can fix it or i have them for sale...Just P/M me if you like...Mikey

Hey, now this was helpful. Just picked up that exact drum in a big load of old stuff. Yeah, it is a heavy sucker. Mine needs a bit more work than that, but at least now I know what it is. I love this forum!

Very nice drum for 20 bucks. Eight lugs , pretty much means that they intended it for higher things. I'm not a fan of metal drums ,in general but having just rebuilt a COB one recently , I have become a bit more interested.

Have you found , any annoying overtones? The one I just did was a parallel drop snare model and I found that I had to really tweak it to get rid of some poltergeists-----more so than with a similar wooden shelled drum.

I've got two that are very similar. Both have "Japan" on them in one place or another. Neither had a badge of any kind (when I got them, anyway). One is of the 8-lug variety with standard "Pearl" style lugs, the other a 6-lugger with more of a "Gretsch" syle of lug.

Your post makes me think maybe I ought to clean & fix 'em up...
