Super Gonz:I went thru the exact same thing when I bought a set of 1957 Sonors. All drums were Pre-international sizes.Getting the PI heads is a VERY expensive proposition. There IS a workaround tho...Lets take the bass drum. 1) Get a pair of 22 inch hoops and a standard 22 inch head2) Put rubber washers under all the Bass Drum lugs. This should give you enough "Splay" to use the 22 inch head on the drum. The washers extend the lugs out so that the 22 inch hoops line up right. You may have to use 2 or 3 washers to get the size right but it can be done. You can do the same thing with the other drums, if the snare/tom is 12.5 inches, get a pair of 13 inch hoops cheaply on EBAY, insert the washers, and use a standard 13 inch head.believe it or not, this is what hundereds of drummers did in the 1970s, when all those Pre-International sets were available used for very low prices. Its an old trick, but it works most of the time. I cant say for sure it will work on your Premiers, but heck its worth a try before you spend $1000 on Pre-Int heads!!

Certainly wouldn't be that much.

The situation is slightly different with the Premiers because Remo keeps stock on the 9 7/8", 11 7/8", 16 1/2" and 19 5/8" sizes in Ambassador(clear, smooth and coated),Emperor(clear, smooth and coated),Controlled Sound,Fibreskyn FA and Clear Pinstripe. Not all types have all the sizes-----but the list prices are only $3 to $8 more than the list on the equivalent standard sizes-----the 11 7/8" Ambassador and Emperor heads for instance are in the 26.00 range but you will pay list price. There will not likely be any dealer cutrate prices on those special orders. Its only the 21 5/16" where it will likely have to be a custom order. That's why I thought using the code established for my Trixon heads would pare away some of the initial cost and get the price in line a bit. My heads are around 100.00 to 130.00 for that size because I had to pay for the custom prep but equivalent 22" heads are upwards of 70.00(list), anyway. The next run will be somewhat less expensive(I hope).

Quick question,.....When did Remo stop make`n the 22" ??

I have the original Sonor Head on my Phonic but I remember going to Jacks in Boston and getting a 22" Remo Emporer they had in stock !! When I got my drums, the pedal mark was all the way through, I replaced all the heads except the Reso on the Bass !!

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

They still make 22" heads but my list of equivalent sized heads for the older Premier shells does not show a 21 5/16" for the Premier version.

Correct, it's 21 5/8 or 21 7/8, more likely the 21 5/8. He should measure the inside diameter of his BD hoop to be more accurate. If his shells and hoops are out of round, he'll need to, with pipe clamps or bungee cords, pull and push his BD hoop into round then measure.

Don't give REMO the EXACT diameter, go to the 1/8" larger, they usually cut their custom heads a bit tight, you'll need play to tension it down.

21 7/8 is too large. Even 5/8 seems big. Laying the 22" head on it,

it looked like a kid trying on dads shoes. I'll re-measure, when I get

time, & post a pic of the findings.

Well, measuring the inside of the ring, it's 21/58.

All the replies have been helpful, thanks all

I checked again on the head availability for these older Premier drums. It is as I stated , the 10,12,16 and 20 equivalents are in stock at Remo in about 10 different formulations. The surcharge on them is between 3-8 $ per head above the standard sized heads of their type. With the regard to the 21 5/8" head, there are production codes for a number of formulations but they do not produce them by machine( as they do the others). They are made by hand and therefore are a CM head(custom). They will therefore be in the 70.00-100.00 range. Codes for the Ambassador coated and Powerstroke Clear, as two examples are CM-1891-BR-21625 and CM-2738-P3-21625 respectively.

So, three months, and nearly $300 in heads, later, this thing sounds great. New heads all around. The bass heads took 2.5 months, the others about a month. It's amazing what new heads can do.

I found an 80's 14" Premier tom for cheap & hung it & the 12" on a stand. Not great for access but close enough.

I bought a bag of rivets for the holey crash and...just to stay with the program, the holes are too big. A new pedal & throne & my neighbors hate me.

hehe

Now, if I can only figure out what I'm doing.

In the future, I will make sure the heads are standard issue.
