Octoban placement?

Hey B, I'll still take one, Papa Jo Jones for every three, Simon Phillips or Dave Weckl's. It's all about the 'Real-Feel' for me. Papa could groove in his sleep like very few (if any,) can while wide-awake today. They haven't invented a digital anything yet that can make the listener feel and hear a groove the way that a 'natural' drummer can. Phillips is good, but his playing style, as deadly as it is, doesn't have -any- of the same 'feel' of even the simplest, Papa Jo solo.

Example:

I was playing some Papa style Dixie Land riffs on the rims of my drums the other day and my wife came running downstairs and commented; 'Wow, what are you doing? That sounds great!' I told her; 'I stole it from an old drummer named, Papa Jo Jones.' She gave me the credit, but I knew, it was just, Papa Joe, still kicking a$$ (through me,) all the way from the grave.

Will someone remember and still be blown away by a, Simon Phillips or a Dave Weckl drum solo 50 years from now? 50 years from now, I think kids will -still- be trying to cop; Papa Joe, Buddy, Gene, Max, Elvin, Tony, etc.

Why? Because of the 'Real-Feel' of that stuff! Mechanically perfect is one thing, creating 'Art' is another. "Or, you got it, or, you don't!" (Mel Brooks)

PS - Bunny, no hi-jack intended... my apology for going off-topic.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

I would think that over the hats would be better. They could would make good left hand accents off the hat/octobans. How long are they and ever want to pitch let me know might take them off your hands.

The shortest ones they make!!!! Not as short as Ddrums deccabons shorties BY ANY MEANS!!!!!

This is right hand accent as I am a LEFTY drummer!!!!

Where would I place the octabons? In a dark closet far removed from the drums I like.:DBut, seriously.......If you are going to play such a large drum set with the dreaded octabons, the best placement is anywhere that you can reach them without interfering with other drums or cymbals.

Funny funny!!!!!

I play a six piece kit (two kicks, one up, two down), and a pair of those Octos I have tuned like timbales. I haven't fallen in love with them...

Man, I have more than enough to keep me busy with a 1-up, 2-down set-up. I wouldn't know what to do with octobans, much less, where to put them in my set-up.Bunny - unless you're playing in a Rush tribute band and you're going for a Neil Peart 'Wall to wall drums' set-up, Why lug all that extra stuff to gigs? My gig set-up is so stripped down, both for drums and weight, that I can load in or out in 10/15 minutes all by my lonesome. You're going to have to hire a roadie at some point! lolBut... If it stokes your fire... go for it.John

I thought it would stoke my fire; some days I can get into them, some days I DESPISE them...

I am too much of a groove drummer to play like Peart, and I mean this with all respect to Peart on Earth- He's a technical Wunderkind. He also manages to inject soul into those precision performances, but Neil is a technical GOD.

I like the timbale sound I get from a nice pair of Octobans, but I can leave the sound, as well.

I guess Octobans are an acquired taste. They worked ok for Stu Copeland. I couldn't use them for my current Roots Rock band. But If I landed a gig with Dixie Dregs they'd be just peachy. I'd put them by the Hi-hat.....

I find myself doing some Stewart Copeland stuff, but I am a LONG way from his proficiency...

Sauseech his own. Appreciate your appreciation, but I still love Simon. I don't know much of either Weckl, but we like what we like.

Simon's feel and sniper-accuracy are awesome (to me). So fun to watch and listen. Out of fear of this getting "Immature" or, "tripe", I'm bowing out.

Peace.
