Suggestions Invited!

I recently picked up a 2-piece duco Slingerland kit (bass & snare), which I thought could be used at some small venues. Both pieces were in pretty nice condition, cosmetically speaking. Both also came with all original components, as far as I could tell. However, the snare drum came without a batter side head. Once I got the pieces home I discovered that I couldn't fit a head on the batter side of the snare drum. I even tried one of my Aquarian American Vintage heads and it's still not a good fit.

I'm now trying to decide what to do with the pieces and am open to all suggestions. Obviously, I could sell the bass drum "as is", complete with its original hardware and calfskin heads, and then remove all the hardware from the snare drum shell and sell it individually. As you can imagine, I'd rather not go that route if at all possible. Unfortunately I don't know what I can do in so far as getting a batter side head to fit properly on the snare shell.

Any words of wisdom?

THANKS in advance for your time and your help!

Aquarian Vintage heads or tuck your own calf head. There are a few How-To's posted here.

PLEASE don't strip it for parts, don't destroy another piece of history, sell it as is if you must.

You do, and I'll give you such a pinch!!! (Abbot & Costello)

I'm sure there's either a contemporary head, or you could try going native. You didn't mention year. What's on the snare-side of the snare? Plastic or ?

I'd hate to see a good-standing VDF member go all "p00der" on us (or, yourself). If you part, just part ways, not the snare.

Just my sentimental opinion. That would make a very cool, small-venue kit.

No need to destroy that sweet, irreplaceable old drum. Just make four cuts in the hoop of the Aquarian head. Pop it on, tune it up, and play the hell out of that thing. Taking it apart because a head won't fit is like treating a common cold with radiation and Chemotherapy.

Four little cuts... @ 12. 3. 6 & 9. (a Riccola cough-drop will do the trick.)

Both drums were built sometime between 1956-1959. The snare side head was original calfskin but it was ripped. I'll need to replace that also.

John: THANKS for the recommendation. So I make the cuts at 12, 3, 6 & 9. Where exactly am I doing the cutting, near the lip of the head?

Cut just through the metal hoop. Stop at the head. I use a Dremel/Rototool with a cutting disk. It allows the rim on the head to open up so it'll fit on the drum, but it still tunes up normally.

Not to worry. I've done it successfully on several occasions. It works. It'll save you from cannibalizing that great old drum.

Enjoy it after you get it set-up...
