Ludwig Classic Hi Hat Stand Question

Loading...

Hello,

I just won this on ebay. I have plenty of these; I enjoy restoring them. My question is, all of my other stands have a small, thin metal part covering the very bottom middle of the stand (the part that is closest to the floor in playing position). See the photos below to see the metal part missing and intact.

Is there any danger to not having the metal protector piece on there? What purpose does it serve? Couldn't I just take a small piece of sheet metal or plastic and find a screw that fits the existing threads? Should I even bother?

Thanks for your help!

That piece of metal holds a B.B. in the hole that the rod for pedal goes into to lock or hold the rod in place at the base of the stand..You can make a piece for the stand or if you have a Ludwig Sturdi-lok tom mount off a single headed tom that piece of metal-{ the chip piece on the inside of the mount}- will work on the stand...Mikey

looks like you are lucky and still have the ball bearing. Mikey is correct about the part's purpose.

Thanks, gents!

I guess the pedal support that goes in to the stand (the arrowhead style tip) and squeezes in against that ball bearing, making a snug fit.

You learn something new every day!

I don't have any of those pieces extra, I think I might try to find a small, thin piece of metal that I can hopefully cut with tin snips and cut it to size, and then just drill a hole where the screw goes (or start one with an awl). The threads are in tact.

After all this time, I never knew why that piece was there. Thanks for the education. One of the many reasons I love this forum: Like minded people, here to help and share knowledge!
