I guess this is officially Gold Oyster Pearl wrap? I'm trying to figure out if a newer (mid-70s) Pearl kit I have used the same wrap or if it's a Red Oyster Pearl or something else entirely. It doesn't quite match up with either one, I guess because it's so faded. I'll upload a pic of one of my drums for comparison. (So as not to hijack completely, thread here: http://vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=24702 .)

Also, what's up with the cool offset in the boom cymbal stand? I don't think I've seen that before.

That hardware actually made its debut in the 1969 catalog. I'm not sure when the change was made, but by the 1973 catalog that hardware was discontinued. So early 70s could very well be correct. Johnniestix? Mikey777? Are you guys weighing in on this one?

IMO, the finish is definitely "gold oyster pearl" and looks to be preserved very well. I'd be very interested in buying if it was in the US.

As for doublestroke's set and that thread, I'm still convinced it's a 70s Red oyster pearl that's faded. Still a very nice kit, especially if fading is the only wrap issue... hey, is it for sale?

Maybe eventually, Bill. Right now I'm thoroughly enjoying the rehab on it. I figure I'll finish cleaning and polishing it, get the missing lugs and install them, and try it on a few gigs to see how I like it. If there's a long-term future for this kit with me, it's probably situational--for out-of-town rock gigs. I love my big old Luddie kit but MAN it's a hoss to haul around. When we're all jumping in the minivan to drive to Memphis or New Orleans, this kit bagged up might be just the right size and sound.

Cool kit! This kit is featured in the 1969 Pearl catalog as the "Challenger Outfit". The only difference here is the metal 8-lug snare drum, which was probably an upgrade, as the cataloged kit had a 6-lug wood-shell snare drum. I also noted that the badge on this metal snare drum is from a slightly earlier 60's.

As to the color, it's Gold Oyster Pearl! This color is shown in the 1969 catalog.

Yup, nice kit- probably is a Challenger and a 1969- I love that wrap.

The "boom" stand appears to be two top sections joined together at the ratchet.

Once this kit is detailed and fitted out with nice heads it is the epitome of a great, sweet MIJ- congrats.Yes Sir

That cool lookng cymbal stand is NOT a cymbal stand..Its a flat leg Hi-Hat stand that someone made into a cymbal stand...Mikey

Bill, You are right on the date of these drums.Yes the finish is "Gold Oyster Pearl"The hardware Pearl stop making in late 1972 but the tom mount went on to mid 74..The shells are under the Pearl Pres. line of drums.The drums with that badge would have a 5 ply shells with rings...I cannot tell by the photo but the snare drum maybe is a C.O.B shell....Mikey
