Nice find in Holland !

Hi Folks,

Just want to share with you my latest purchase.

A few days ago I noticed an ad on a Dutch site.

A 1960's Japanese Emperador set, some cymbals and hardware were offered for 125.00. The pictures were not great but what caught my eye was the snare. (see pic1 & pic2). The badge didn't look familiar but it looked much older then the other stuff. I started to do some research and where else then on VDF, I found what it was. A 1940's Triumph, made in Holland.

If you didn't already, do check the article on Triumph and Royal drums by Tom Vermulst on VD Guide. A brilliant story on both Dutch brands, beautiful historical insight with pre- and post WWII as background setting, absolute must read!

In the mean time I've been in contact with Tom. The snare needs a good cleaning but seems to be complete. The batter hoop however is quite out of shape. I'll post some pictures when it's all cleaned and polished.

The Emperador set isn't in great condition and the cymbals are junk but as a nice bonus the set came with a nice WFL flat base snare stand.

PS: Wrong section, should have been in Vintage non USA,... my mistake.

I rarely get excited about MIJ kits, but that snare drum is something special. I love everything about it. The design of the strainer and the lugs is killer. I'd love to play that thing to hear what it sounds like. Nice find!

Thanks for the nice comments.

The cleaning is making good progress so I will be posting some more pics soon.

To answer Supraphonic D's question, I didn't try the kit as the bottom heads and hoops are missing. I'm not expecting great things from it as the bearing edged look pretty rough.

About the design and the particular look of the snare, read Tom's article and you'll find out that the Triumph snare is an almost exact copy of a Swiss Imperial snare.

When the war is over in 1945, Mr. van Wouw, a importer of Spanish guitars steps into the little basement in the Jordaan with a Swiss ‘Imperial’ snare in his arms and puts the question: ‘Please, make me such a thing because I want to sell drums as well’. Looise and Vogel design a new snare drum and the new brand ‘Triumph’ is born.

Check this out,...

The strainer, the hexagonal lugs, even up to the brand logo is copied,... quite amazing,... a European manufacturer copying another European one.

Unlike most copies, Triumph is well made and equals the quality of the original.

Hey stedi, if you want to sell those MIJ drums, there is a buyer in Sweden...I'll get you any info you want, just PM and I'll get it to you. It makes no sense for me to send a MIJ kit from the US as the taxes alone are far too high.

Hi,

Nice historical find.

The snare drum lugs remind me of a Dutch 'Majestic' marching snare drum, I've owned last year:

Quite equal shape, but your's are shorter.
